Softball Held Off By No. 1 Salisbury in Non-Conference Doubleheader

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by No. 1 Salisbury University at home on Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader.

Despite outhitting the Sea Gulls (26-1) in game two, the Hornets (12-22) fell 5-3 in the latter half of the doubleheader. In game one, Salisbury scored in the first four innings in route to a 14-5 win in five innings. For Shenandoah, the day was highlighted by Allison McQueeney hitting her first career home run.

GAME ONE RECAP

  • Two walks began the day for the top team in the nation. With two on base, the Sea Gulls executed a double steal to bring the runners within scoring distance. A sacrifice fly scored the first run of the day and a two-out home run to left field, added another pair of runs to put Salisbury up 3-0 in the first.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Brenna Westwood led off the day for Shenandoah by reaching base on a fielding error. Allison McQueeney then laid down a perfectly placed bunt to reach base and bring the tying run to the plate. After the two Hornets advanced on a sacrifice bunt, they were stranded in scoring position on two ground outs.
  • Salisbury started the second with a single and a walk and scored to make it 4-0 on a single to the outfield. An error and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the visitors. The Sea Gulls took advantage of the loaded bases and scored thanks to another Hornets error. Now up 6-0, Salisbury extended its lead with two more runs on a single up the middle.
  • Sydnee Flores drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the inning and pinch hitter Hannah Evans ripped a double down the left field line to score Flores and put Shenandoah on the board in the second.
  • An RBI from Westwood made it 8-2 and Rachael Blumenschine then crossed the plate to add another Hornets' run on a McQueeney single. However, in the third, Salisbury scored three more runs with two outs in the inning to jump ahead 11-3.
  • Paige Eagleton reached base in the bottom of the third with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. This brought Danielle McNeill to the plate and she executed a double to left field to score Eagleton, making it 11-4.
  • In the fourth, Shenandoah got the first two Salisbury batters out but the top team in the nation proved why they are number one and rattled off four two-out hits to score three more times.
  • With Shenandoah down 14-4 and two outs in the bottom of the fourth, McQueeney stepped up to the plate and launched a ball to deep left center for her first career home run. Shenandoah then didn't allow Salisbury to score in the fifth and came to the plate just needing two runs to continue the game.
  • Sarah Medellin and McNeill reached base to put those two runs on the base path. However, Shenandoah was unable to score as Salisbury locked up the five-inning win with a strikeout and a ground out.

GAME TWO RECAP

  • Shenandoah got two of the first three Salisbury batters out in the first inning but the Sea Gulls again put together a two-out rally to go up 3-0 at the end of the top of the first. Pitcher Savannah Thorne shut down the Sea Gulls for the next two innings and the offense had chances to tie the game.
  • In innings one and two, Shenandoah left a combined four runners on base including two in scoring position. In the third, it looked like that pattern may continue but a huge two-out hit from Thorne brought Shenandoah within one, as Paige Eagleton and Sarah Medellin both scored.
  • A lead-off double to kickstart the fourth and a single to follow that up put Salisbury up 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, Allison McQueeney singled and got to third on a hit from Rachael Blumenschine. This put runners on the corners for the Hornets and Medellin took full advantage of that with a single to center field, scoring Eagleton and once again bringing Shenandoah within one.
  • Neither team scored in the fifth and Salisbury went back up by two in the sixth inning on a solo home run to right center. Salisbury then retired Shenandoah in order in the sixth to keep the game at 5-3.
  • Kayla Stephenson came in to pitch the seventh inning for Shenandoah and held the Sea Gulls hitless to keep the game within reach for her squad. However, Shenandoah's comeback bid fell short as Salisbury pitched a one-two-three inning to close out the contest.
