Thorne Lifts Softball to Game Two Win

Hornets Split With Eagles

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team ended its non-conference schedule with a split at home versus The University of Mary Washington after gaining a 3-0 win in the latter half of the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Savannah Thorne pitched a complete game in game two to lift the Hornets (13-23) to victory after the Eagles (15-21) scored two runs in the seventh inning of game one to take the opening victory. Thorne has now pitched at least seven innings in three games this season and it marks the first home win for SU since March 12th, when SU defeated Mary Baldwin.

GAME ONE RECAP

  • After a lead-off strikeout in the first, thrown by Kayla Stephenson, the Hornets found themselves in trouble as the Eagles rattled off three straight singles to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to deep right field put the Eagles on top, 1-0, early.
  • The Eagles started the second inning with a double to right center and one sacrifice bunt later, the lead runner stood on third base with just one out. The visitors then took a 2-0 lead on a single up the middle.
  • Paige Eagleton led off the bottom half of the frame with a single to left center and Danielle McNeill followed that up with a perfectly placed bunt to get on base. With one out in the inning, Kayla Stephenson drew a walk to load the bases as Eliza Hunt came in to run for Stephenson.
  • Rachael Blumenschine lined a ball to straightaway center to bring home Eagleton on the sacrifice fly. One batter later, Brenna Westwood picked up her first hit of the game to even the game at two.
  • Abigail Campbell entered the circle for the Hornets at the start of the third and through the next two innings forced the Eagles to leave two runners stranded in scoring position. SU was also unable to score in those two frames, leaving the two teams tied, 2-2, entering the fifth.
  • Mary Washington singled to start the fifth and the next batter singled to the pitcher, with the lead runner able to race all the way to third on the infield single. Two batters later, a simple throw to first for the second out allowed two more Eagles' runs to come across the plate, as SU tried to get an out at the plate and a throwing error got away, allowing the runs to score.
  • Allison McQueeney lined a ball all the way to the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth and rounded the bases for a triple. Tiffany Bower stepped up to the plate and hit a single through the middle to bring SU within one, as UMW still led 4-3.
  • Campbell pitched a perfect sixth inning allowing Shenandoah to come to the plate, still down by one. Hannah Evans accepted the challenge to tie the game and hit an opposite-field solo home run, tying the game, 4-4.
  • Mary Washington drew two consecutive walks to start the fifth as Shenandoah brought Stephenson back in to pitch with the two runners on for the Eagles. Stephenson recorded the first out of the inning with a sacrifice bunt, but the two UMW runners advanced to second and third.
  • The very next batter hit a single to right center for two RBI and put the Eagles up 6-4 in the final inning. With runners on the corners, Stephenson got out of the sticky situation with a strikeout to end the top half of the inning.
  • Shenandoah picked up a base hit from Bower to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs remaining. Sydnee Flores pinch ran for Bower and advanced to second on a ground out and then moved to third on a passed ball. So down to their final out, Shenandoah had the tying run at the plate and a runner on third. However, Mary Washington ended the game by striking out the final batter to end the game.

GAME TWO RECAP

  • Savannah Thorne started the game by getting to first two Eagles batters out. She then pitched two walks and hit a batter, loading the bases. With bases loaded, Thorne pitched a strikeout to get out of the inning and keep the game scoreless.
  • Mary Washington hit a single to start the second, putting a runner on base to start the frame. The Eagles drew a walk, but the call was reversed as the lead runner left early, sending the batter back to the plate on a 3-1 count and putting an out on the board. That call helped the game stay scoreless.
  • Heading to the bottom of the third, Rachael Blumenschine led off the inning with a single, then Brenna Westwood came to the plate and hit a single to the right side. The duo then moved up a base on a passed ball, putting two in scoring position for the Hornets. Allison McQueeney came to the plate and hit a single to the outfield, scoring Blumenschine and Westwood, putting Shenandoah up 2-0. McQueeney advanced to second on the throw home. A deep fly ball by Tiffany Bower moved McQueeney to third with just one out in the frame.
  • Sarah Medellin added on to the Hornets' lead on a single up the middle, allowing McQueeney to score.
  • Thorne retired seven of the next night Eagles, to keep Shenandoah up 3-0.
  • In the top of the seventh, Mary Washington drew a lead-off walk but Thorne and the Hornets stayed calm and shut down the next three batters to end the game.
