Women's Lacrosse Claims the Third Seed in ODAC Tournament

Hornets Host Quarterfinals on Tuesday

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2024 regular season with a dominant 24-3 ODAC win over Eastern Mennonite University at home on Wednesday night. SU will enter the 2024 ODAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and get a home game on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

The Hornets (13-3, 7-2 ODAC) had 11 different goal-scorers in the win over the Royals (3-11, 1-8). On Tuesday, the Hornets also found out that they are ranked fourth in the NCAA Region V rankings, one spot ahead of Roanoke and two spots behind Washington & Lee, who enter the ODAC tournament as the No. 2 and No. 1 seeds, respectively.

GAME RECAP

  • In both the first and second quarters, SU outscored EMU 8-1 in each frame. 34 seconds into the contest, Ainsley Buckner opened the scoring on a feed from Kate Vendemia before Buckner added a helper on Amy Bell's first goal of the game, putting SU up 2-0. Buckner added her third point of the night with another tally, less than five minutes into the game.
  • An EMU turnover, helped led to Buckner getting her fourth point of the night, as she found Gabriella Raspanti to put Shenandoah up by four. The Royals scored to cut into their deficit but the Hornets picked right back up and gained a goal from Alex Ripkin, putting them in the lead by four once again.
  • Buckner won the next draw control, giving the ball right back to the SU offense. This led to another goal from Raspanti, with Cameryn Bowker getting the assist. Another SU draw control win, this time by Talia Maria, helped Taryn Junta find the back of the net, making it 7-1. Before the first quarter could end, Ripkin scored her second and final goal of the game.
  • EMU got the first goal on the board in the second but after that Shenandoah rattled off eight consecutive goals to end the first half. Bell, Buckner, and Madison Re scored the first trio of Shenandoah goals in the second, then Raspanti added one to get the running clock started.
  • With 6:25 left in the second quarter, Shenandoah earned a free-position opportunity with Re taking the shot and firing it right past the Royals' goalie. Elizabeth Szell became the seventh different Hornet to score in the game when she made it 14-2. Shenandoah was a woman down after a green card was issued and Haley Sullivan caused an EMU turnover, scooped up the ball, and raced down the field and scored the final goal of the first half. Shenandoah led 16-2 at the end of the first 30 minutes of play.
  • Roughly eight minutes into the second half, Sullivan assisted on a Grace Thornhill goal after Raspanti scored to begin the half. EMU added its final goal of the game with over five minutes to go in the third and SU found another goal-scorer to extend its lead after the EMU goal. Ciera Overley was the Hornet to find the back of the net for the first time in the contest. Buckner completed the game with a free-position goal as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
  • At the end of the regular season, Buckner leads the team in goals (46), assists (26), and points (72).
  • In tonight's game, SU went 13-14 on clear attempts and had 21 draw controls.
  • Jordan Higgins made the team's two saves tonight, both in the fourth quarter. Jacqueline Seward, who started the game in net, picked up the win. Seward is now 2-0 this season.
