Outdoor Track & Field Wraps Up at ODAC Championships

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Katya Hoover earning second team All-ODAC in the women's javelin highlighted day two of the 2024 Outdoor Track & Field ODAC Championships at Bridgewater College for the Shenandoah University track & field teams.

The women's team finished the championships in sixth place with 66 points while the men's side came in ninth with 30 points. The University of Lynchburg took home the ODAC Championship on both sides of the meet.

Hoover, who earned All-ODAC honors yesterday in the high jump, came in second place this afternoon in the javelin with a throw of 37.54m. There was a separation of 0.28m between Hoover and the first place mark, while she cleared third place by 1.90m.

Dylan Tubbs came in fifth place for the men's javelin with his mark of 51.20m. Tubbs was one of five competitors to break the 50m mark in the event.

In the women's 4x400m relay, the Hornets' team of Sarah Sidoro, Emma Nicely, Amy Oleksy, and Mackenzie Plowman came in fourth place with a time of 4:08.48, just beating out Virginia Wesleyan's relay team, who crossed the line less than half a second after SU. Nicely, running in the 800m, broke the score record in the event with a performance of 2:19.17 which breaks an 11 year record for the program.

Sidoro, along with Janelle Anderson, Haley Van Voorhis, and Alexis Hubbard, running in the second heat, competed in the 4x100m relay and took home seventh place with a time of 51 seconds flat.

Sidoro wasn't done there, she also ran in the 400m event finals after qualifying on day one of the championships. Sidoro came in fifth place with a mark of 59.81 seconds.

Charles Vakos, Noah Hurd, Devin Kohout, and Elias McGhie represented the SU men in the 4x400m relay and crossed the finish line at 3:35.83, earning eighth place. The four Hornets averaged a time of 53.95 seconds per leg of the relay. McGhie also partook in the 400m hurdles and placed sixth after crossing the line at 57.83 seconds.

Vakos also earned team points in the 4x100m relay as he and teammates William Crowder, Wyatt Newcome, and Christopher Smalls came in eighth place with a time of 43.25. There was a 0.28-second difference between ninth and seventh place in the event.

Crowder then ran in the 100m finals and ran a 10.75-second race to place seventh in the event. The eight final qualifiers all ran a close race as there was a 0.43-second difference between first and last place.

In the women's 800m finals, Plowman ran a time of 2:22.80 and placed seventh. Plowman ran in heat two and had the best time in her heat, the six runners ahead of her all came from the third heat.

The SU women had two top-eight placements in the 1500m finals, with Madeline Lotts coming in sixth and Oleksy wrapping up one spot behind Lotts. The two Hornets both finished within a hair of each other, as Lotts crossed 0.32 seconds in front of Oleksy.

Kohout also finished in the top eight in the 1500m but on the men's side. Kohout ran a time of 4:03.70, helping the men earn a point.

Back on the women's side, Sarah Christy ran in the 5k and placed eighth with her time of 19:20.52.

The Hornets head to the University of Mount Olive for the UMO First & Final Qualifier during the weekend of May 10-12.
