No. 22 Women's Lacrosse Hooks Marlins in ODAC Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - Following a rainy day in Winchester, the No. 22 Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team made it rain down goals in a 24-4 ODAC win versus Virginia Wesleyan University at home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (8-2, 3-1 ODAC) had 12 different goal scorers and forced the Marlins (3-6, 1-1) to turnover the ball xx times in the dominant conference win. SU has now scored at least 20 goals in back-to-back games and has hit the double-digit goal total in six of its last seven games. The win also marks the sixth time in the last five seasons that Shenandoah won a game by at least 20 goals.

Gabriella Raspanti - 4 goals, 1 assist, 2 ground balls
Emily Lerch - 3 goals, 1 assist
Amy Bell - 2 goals, 1 assist

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Marlins got off the first shot of the game but Madison Perry denied the shot and it directly led to an Emily Lerch goal to put Shenandoah up 1-0. Virginia Wesleyan called an early timeout after Amy Bell scored, making it 2-0 with 11:22 remaining in the quarter. Ainsley Buckner gave SU a three-goal cushion and then was in a giving mood as she found Lerch, who then pocketed her second goal of the afternoon. With 5:08 left in the opening period, Buckner gained another assist on a Madison Re goal to give SU a five-goal lead. After the Marlins scored their first goal of the contest, Madison Re won the ensuing draw control and raced down the middle of the field and scored just nine seconds after the VWU goal. To end the quarter, Grace Thornhill scored a free-position goal to give SU a 7-1 advantage after one.
  • Haley Sullivan, Bell, Raspanti, and Lerch rattled off four consecutive SU goals to get the running clock started for the first time this game with Raspanti and Buckner adding assists on the middle two goals. Virginia Wesleyan cut its deficit back down to nine but Re got the Hornets back up by 10 with a helping hand from Buckner. Shenandoah ended the half with a Raspanti tally as time was winding down. Shenandoah led 13-2 at the break.
  • Shenandoah began the second half with two goals from Buckner to push its lead up to 15-2. Buckner intercepted a pass from the Marlins' goal and got an easy look at the net for her latter goal. The teams traded goals in the middle portion of the quarter but Shenandoah continued to put pressure on the visitors with three goals in the final four minutes of the frame, with Emily Ransom ending the period with her only goal of the afternoon.
  • The Hornets added five more goals in the fourth with five different goal scorers. Sarah Karlinchak, Hannah Schneider, and Taryn Junta ended the game by all scoring their second goals of the season.
  • With Perry starting the game in net for Shenandoah she picked up her fifth win of the season. Goalies Jordan Higgins and Jacqueline Seward split playing time in the second half of the game, each playing 15 minutes. Higgins made one save in her outing.
  • With Lerch's three goals in the game, she now has 11 goals this season and joins five other Hornets with at least 10 goals on the year.
  • Buckner had a game-high nine draw controls which gives her exactly 50 this year. The nine draw controls are now a single-game career-high for the senior.
