Women's Lacrosse Wins First Ever NCAA Tournament Game

Hornets Play Ithaca Tomorrow in Second Round

ITHACA, N.Y. - In the program's first ever NCAA Tournament game, the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team defeated SUNY Canton 17-9 on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Ithaca College.

Women's lacrosse becomes the fourth SU team to win its first NCAA contest, joining men's basketball, softball, and baseball. The Hornets (15-4) only led by one at the end of the first but picked up pace across the next three frames, outscoring the Roos (13-6) 12-5 across the final 45 minutes.

With the win, Shenandoah advances to round two to play Ithaca tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.

RECAP

  • Shenandoah relied on 12 different goal scorers in the win, the first of which being Amy Bell who scored to make it 1-0 29 seconds into the match. Less than 30 seconds later, the Roos had evened the contest up, 1-1.
  • Ainsley Buckner controlled the draw for SU and led the offense down the field, leading to a Kate Vendemia shot which was saved. Vendemia and the Hornets kept possession with Gabriella Raspanti then firing a shot, which was blocked. A Canton foul was then called leading to a free-position shot by Sofia Albi, which the Roos also saved. However, in came Buckner to scoop up the ground ball and get a shot past the Roos to make it 2-1.
  • SUNY Canton scored twice in a matter of minutes to take a 3-2 lead, which would be its only of the day. Madison Re received an assist from Emily Ransom on her only goal of the afternoon, tying the game, 3-3. Minutes later, the Roos fired a shot that Madison Perry saved, with Emily Lerch getting the ground ball. The ground ball transitioned into a good clear attempt for Shenandoah. In their offensive zone, Buckner scored her second goal of the quarter and 54th of the season, putting SU on top 4-3. A goal from Emily Ransom immediately made it 5-3 after Lerch won the draw control to give SU control of the ball.
  • The final three minutes of the first belonged to the Roos, as they rattled off three shots,  the final of which broke past the Hornets' defense to bring them within one at the end of one. An early second quarter turnover by SU led to SUNY Canton tying the game, 5-5, less than two minutes into the second.
  • Shenandoah regained control of the game and momentum as Lerch scored her 25th goal of the '24 campaign to give the Hornets the lead. Goals from Albi, Vendemia, Elizabeth Szell, and Alex Ripkin extended the Shenandoah lead, 10-6, with just over five minutes remaining in the half. SU's offense quieted down for the final five minutes, which allowed Canton's offense to pick up. The Roos gained five shots in the final minutes of the half but SU's Perry stopped all five shots to keep her team up at the break.
  • As the teams entered the third quarter, the Roos continued their pressure and scored two quick goals to make it 10-8. Vendemia quickly stopped any momentum that may of been building for the Roos, as she scored SU's first goal in over 10 minutes of game time, bringing SU's lead to 11-8. Shenandoah made sure it didn't take 10 minutes to find its next goal because 65 seconds following Vendemia's goal Raspanti planted enough goal for the Hornets. Raspanti then added a helper to her plate as she assisted on the Hornets' next goal, which came from Buckner.
  • With a minute left in the third quarter, Bell scored her second and final goal of the contest to put SU up 14-8. However, the Roos didn't go quietly in the quarter as they'd add a goal before the third quarter buzzer sounded.
  • In the fourth quarter, it was all Shenandoah. The Hornets picked up three more goals, with Buckner tallying her final goal and Sarah Karlinchak and Haley Sullivan scoring their firsts of the NCAA first round game. Perry made a save as well in the quarter to bring her total to 12 on the afternoon.
