Softball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan in First Game of Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - In the first game of the 2024 ODAC Softball Tournament, the Shenandoah University softball team lost 5-1 against top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University in the VWU pod on Friday.

The Marlins (31-7) scored the first five runs of the game, including a three-spot in the second inning, as the Hornets (16-25) scored their only run in the final inning of the contest.

RECAP

  • Brenna Westwood, leading off the game, singled to right field to get the Hornets on the bases. The next batter struck out, but Westwood easily advanced to second on a passed ball. SU's early momentum stopped there as the next two batters recorded outs, ending the inning.
  • Kelsey Freeman, starting in the circle for SU, got the first four Marlins she faced out. Following the first four VWU outs, the next five Marlins reached base in one way or another. The first of which singled and advanced two more bases on a Hornets error. A walk and a steal later, the Marlins had two in scoring position with just one out.
  • The next batter brought in the first run of the afternoon on a fielder's choice and then the Marlins put together two straight singles to bring two more runs across, going up 3-0 at the end of two.
  • Shenandoah went down in order in the top of the third and in the bottom half of the inning, Meghan Gaskins came into pitcher after a lead-off double for the Marlins. Gaskins stranded the runner at second after forcing two pop-ups and an outfield fly.
  • In the fourth, Virginia Wesleyan hit another lead-off double, this time the runner scored. The lead runner stole third and came home on a throwing error by the Hornets.
  • Down 4-0 in the fifth, Savannah Throne and Danille McNeill hit back-to-back singles as the Hornets tried to make a comeback. However, two groundouts ended the SU comeback for the moment.
  • A one-out triple followed by a single up the middle put the Marlins up by five in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The score stayed the same as SU entered the seventh, down to its final three outs. The first Hornets flew out to center field. Thorne then drew a walk to get SU on base. Down to the final out, Makayla Cox came to the plate looking to keep the game going.
  • Cox doubled to right center field which was far enough to in the outfield for Thorne to score from first, making it 5-1. After several defensive changes, the Marlins ended the game on a groundout.
