Women's Tennis Begins Season with Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team opened its fall portion its schedule with a 4-3 win at home against Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets (1-0) took the narrow victory over the Knights (0-1) with singles wins by Allison Cherwien and Erin Talko.

The season opened with a pair of wins in doubles action for the Hornets to earn the first point of the afternoon. Tanea Spruill and Olivia Guzzo handled their opponents on court one with a 6-0 win as Allison Cherwien and Leigha Montrief did the same on court three.

On the front three courts in singles competition, SU would drop two of the three contests. The lone victory on the front courts for SU came from Guzzo who took the match 6-2, 6-2.

With the score close, the Hornets had to rely on two three-set matches to get the job done. Both Erin Talko and Allison Cherwien battled from behind to take their matches. Cherwien fell 7-6 in the first set, tied it with a 6-2 win in the middle, and rounded her afternoon out with a 7-5 third set victory.

Talko rebounded well after the opening set loss and won her final two sets 6-4, 6-3.
