Men's Basketball Falls 66-62 in Third Consecutive Overtime Battle

WINCHESTER, Va. – For the third consecutive game, the Shenandoah University men's basketball team went to overtime, falling 66–62 against Ferrum College on Wednesday night in ODAC action.

The Panthers (11–3, 3–2 ODAC) held the Hornets (6–8, 1–4 ODAC) to just two points in the final four minutes of regulation, forcing overtime after SU missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer. Ferrum opened the extra period with a 7–2 run and secured the victory by converting six free throws in the final seconds.

RECAP

Trailing early in the contest, John Allen gave the Hornets their first lead, 8–7, with a two-handed slam assisted by Gavin Bizyak. On the next possession, Allen grabbed a defensive rebound, leading to a fast-break layup by Davion Roberts for a three-point advantage.

Joshua Stephen extended the lead to six with a three-pointer, but Ferrum responded with a 13–5 run to regain control with 3:46 remaining in the first half. Though Shenandoah held the Panthers without a field goal for the remainder of the half, Ferrum converted four free throws to take a two-point lead into the break.

Shamir Taylor, Stephen, and Roberts combined for six points across the first three possessions of the second half, giving SU a narrow lead.

Later in the half, Elia Morandotti came off the bench and sparked the Hornets with a pull-up jumper and a tip-in layup, pushing SU's lead to five. After a Ferrum miss, Allen quickly connected with Stephen for a three-pointer, extending the Hornets' largest lead of the night to 43–35.

Over the next five minutes, Ferrum's defense limited Shenandoah to just two points, closing the gap to one. Roberts was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three free throws to extend SU's lead back to four.

Taylor followed a Panthers' layup by scoring on consecutive possessions, giving Shenandoah a six-point advantage with under three minutes remaining. However, Ferrum answered with three scores in their next four trips to tie the game at 52.

In the final 69 seconds of regulation, both teams missed key shots, with Shenandoah forcing a defensive stop on Ferrum's final possession to send the game into overtime.

The Panthers opened the extra period with a three-pointer from the top of the key, followed by a layup after a Shenandoah miss. Taylor answered with his first three-pointer of the night, cutting the deficit to 59–57 with 34 seconds left.

Ferrum secured the win from the free-throw line, converting six attempts in the final moments while holding SU scoreless for the remainder of overtime.

The Panthers forced 19 turnovers while committing only 10 themselves.

Stephen led all Hornet scorers with 17 points, while Taylor and Roberts also finished in double figures.
