Men's Basketball Bested by Averett

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team hosted its first ODAC game of the season and fell 74-59 on Saturday afternoon to Averett University.

The Cougars (5-2, 1-1 ODAC) grabbed the lead on their first possession of the game and held on to it for the rest of the contest. The Hornets (6-2, 0-2) were led by Dorian Davis, who scored 15 points in the game.

RECAP

The first 15 points of the game for SU were all threes, with Davis and Ellis Wright each making a pair. Wright's second three tied the game at 15 with 11:35 remaining in the first half, the last time the game would be tied.

Over the next two minutes, the Cougars went on a 9-2 run, before grabbing a 10-point lead with four minutes left in the opening period of play. A three by Landon Russ brought the Hornets back within seven, but Averett was granted free throws just before the buzzer sounded for halftime to go back up by ten.

In the second half, Averett had an answer for every Hornets' point, with SU unable to go on a run larger than four points, which helped the Cougars maintain their lead and win by 15.

Matthew Simmons provided seven assists for the Hornets. Wright and Russ added 11 points each.
