Women's Lacrosse Begins Season with Overtime Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team began its 2025 season with a 15-14 overtime victory at home versus St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

In the final two minutes of regulation, the Hornets (1-0) led 14-12 but two goals in less than 30 seconds by the Seahawks (0-1) forced the extra period. Maddie Gaboury, a first-year goalie, made a key stop in the overtime period which allowed SU to transition down the field and score the game-winning goal off the stick of Ayla Jantz.

RECAP

Talia Maria won the first draw control of the season for SU which quickly led to the first goal of the 2025 season as Alex Ripkin struck gold just 68 seconds into the contest. The Seahawks answered right back to tie the game but good ball movement by Ainsley Buckner led to Ripkin's second goal of the frame, putting SU up 2-1.

St. Mary's ended the first quarter on a 4-0 run which put them in the driver's seat, 5-2, and led the Hornets to making a change in goalies as Gaboury entered the cage.

The three-goal lead wasn't sustainable for the Seahawks as two goals by Emily Ransom and goals by Buckner and Addison Harmel gave SU the lead back just minutes into the second. Ripkin scored a first half hat trick which gave a two-goal cushion to Shenandoah with 10 minutes left in the half.

Following another goal by the Seahawks, Buckner earned her second assist of the day as Kaitlin Clements tallied her first career goal to keep the Hornets up by two. At the start of the second half, Brinley Tozer, another first-year for SU, scored her first career goal on a free position shot.

Despite the lead, the Seahawks once again rallied back and tied the game, this time at nine. The game remained tied for just over a minute until Ripkin scored her fourth and fifth goals of the afternoon, pushing SU back in front. Buckner scored less than two minutes after Ripkin to put SU up by three.

St. Mary's scored three of the four next goals in the game to cut its deficit down to one with 5:56 left in regulation. A save by Gaboury kept the Hornets in front which eventually led to Clements scoring her second goal as SU went back up by two with 2:41 left.

However, a failed clear attempt by SU let the Seahawks climb back into the game and tie the contest as the teams went to OT.

Right before OT, the Hornets picked up a card which put the Seahawks up a player and gave them possession to start the extra period. With the extra attacker, St. Mary's picked up a shot on goal, which Gaboury saved. The save allowed SU to clear the ball which ended up in the stick of Jantz, who played hero and scored the game-winning goal.

Ripkin led all players with seven points after wrapping up the day with six goals and an assist. Defender Talia Maria had a team-high caused turnovers with three. Gaboury ended her afternoon with seven saves and her first career win.

UP NEXT

The Hornets travel to the University of Mary Washington next Saturday for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.
