Mary Washington Defeats Women's Lacrosse, 11-6

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team fell 11-6 on the road on Saturday in non-conference play at the University of Mary Washington.

The Hornets (1-1) struck first in the game but were outscored 7-1 by the Eagles (3-0) entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth UMW continued to pull away with four more goals as SU added three of its own.

RECAP

First-year Jaelyn Hawes tallied her first career goal on an assist from Ainsley Buckner to put SU up 1-0 just 65 seconds into the game. SU then got shots on goal from Alex Ripkin and Brinley Tozer which were both saved. With 6:46 left in the first, UMW tied the game before taking the lead 18 seconds later. Two goals in the final two minutes of the quarter gave the home team a 4-1 lead at the end of one.

The Hornets cut their deficit down to two as Emily Ransom scored on a free position shot just over a minute into the second. SU had chances to chip into the deficit again with one shot bouncing off the post and three more being saved in the quarter. UMW led 5-1 at the half.

The Eagles scored the first two goals in the second half before Tozer scored for SU to bring them within four entering the fourth. Mary Washington made six saves in the third quarter which matched its first-half totals.

Tozer added two more goals in the fourth quarter to complete her hat trick but UMW added three goals of its own to lead 10-5 late in the game. With under two minutes left to play Ransom tallied her second goal of the contest but UMW would go on to add a goal with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock to take the 11-6 win.

The Hornets had 19 shots of goal in the game with four players having at least two. Along with her two goals, Ransom also added two assists for a four-point afternoon, which led the team. Julianna Fohner caused four turnovers defensively while Ainsley Buckner secured seven draw controls for the team.
