Women's Lacrosse Sinks Captains in Upset Win

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following a week off from competition, the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team defeated No. 16 Christopher Newport University, 7-3,  on the road on Saturday afternoon.

This marks the second time in two years that the Hornets (2-1) have knocked off a nationally-ranked Captains (2-2) team. Julianna Fohner earned her 100th career ground ball in the win with Amy Bell leading the team with two goals in the upset victory.

RECAP

An early save by Maddy Perry allowed Shenandoah to earn two free position shots at the opposite end of the field. Emily Ransom gained both attempts with the first free position shot getting saved and the second one getting past the Captains' goalie for a 1-0 lead. Nearly two minutes later, Alex Ripkin put SU up 2-0.

CNU answered the Hornets' goals with two of their own, tying the game with six minutes left in the opening quarter. Talia Maria won the ensuing draw control for SU after the game-tying goal, which led to another free position opportunity for the visitors. The Hornets struck gold once again as Sofi Albi broke the tie with her first goal of the season.

Amy Bell, with her first of two goals, scored three minutes into the second, doubling SU's lead. Brinley Tozer added another insurance goal for SU with the team's third free-position goal of the afternoon.

Shenandoah's defense caused four turnovers in the second quarter before CNU was able to find the back of the net in the frame. SU led 5-3 at halftime.

The teams combined for six saves in the opening 13 minutes of the second half, as the score remained 5-3. The score finally changed when Albi connected with Bell for the senior's second goal of the game. Kaitlin Clements scored just before time expired in the third for the Hornets' final goal.

The Hornets caused eight turnovers in the fourth to cap off the strong defensive efforts and hold CNU without a goal in the second half. SU ended the game with 15 caused turnovers. Perry made eight saves for her first win of the season.
