Softball Falls in Extras in Game Two; Cougars Sweep Hornets

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at home versus Misericordia University on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-2) scored three runs in the seventh inning of game one but their comeback fell short as the Cougars (2-0) took a 9-6 victory. In game two, Shenandoah led 5-0 but Misericordia rallied back and forced extras, winning 9-6 in nine innings.

GAME ONE

Pitching Decisions:

RECAP

Misericordia struck first in the opening inning after the lead-off batter reached on a single and advanced on a wild pitch. The three-hole hitter then singled up the middle, scoring the lead-off runner. The Cougars scored again in the second inning following a two-out error that kept the inning alive.

In the third inning, Misericordia earned a double and a single before another single up the middle scored both runners, making it 4-0. An error by Shenandoah at third scored the fifth run of the game with the Cougars then taking a 6-0 lead in the same inning on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fourth, Makayla Cox led off the inning with a single and later advanced to second and third on two passed balls. Sarah Medellin reached on a walk putting two on for SU. Sydney Flores reached on a fielder's choice, with Cox scoring on the play, earning an RBI for Flores.

Paige Eagleton reentered the game and pinch ran for Flores and successfully stole second. Ella Montgomery, pinch-hitting for Danielle McNeill, drove in Eagleton on an RBI single to right field. SU trailed 6-2 at the end of four.

The Cougars extended their lead with three runs, five hits, and an error in the fifth inning. The score remained the same until Rachael Blumenschine singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth, making it 9-3.

The Hornets' comeback attempt started in the seventh inning with back-to-back hits by Allison McQueeney and Rieg. Cox drew a walk which loaded the bases for SU. Following a strikeout, Eagleton hit a sacrifice fly to left center that scored McQueeney.
With two outs and trailing by five, SU had the bases loaded and scored another run on a wild pitch. McNeill delivered a single through the left side of the infield that scored Cox, cutting the deficit down to three. With the tying run at the plate, the Cougars ended the game by forcing a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at second.

GAME TWO

RECAP

Following two walks to begin the game, Cadence Rieg struck out the next three batters in the top of the first to keep the game scoreless. Shenandoah responded in the bottom of the inning by drawing a two-out walk and advancing the runner on a single by Makayla Cox. Taylor Smith stepped into the box and scored both runners on a deep double to left center.

The Cougars left the bases full in the second inning to keep the Hornets up 2-0. SU extended the lead to 3-0 on an RBI by Brenna Westwood.

Rieg and Smith both singled for the Hornets in the bottom of the third which allowed Paige Eagleton to drive in Rieg on a single up the middle. Ella Montgomery singled to left center at the very next at-bat, scoring Smith and giving SU a 5-0 advantage heading to the fourth.

A double in the fourth and a two-RBI triple in the fifth brought Misericordia within two. The Cougars then made it 5-4 on a sacrifice fly to left field following the triple. Two walks and a single loaded the bases in the top of the sixth for the Cougars. A walk scored the game-tying run. No runs in the seventh by either team sent the game to extras.

The score stayed the same until a triple to center field in the top of the ninth scored two runners, putting the visitors ahead by two. A wild pitch later in the inning scored the third run of the inning, giving MU an 8-5 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.

Two flyouts put SU down to its final out with a runner on second. Allison McQueeney stepped up to the plate and scored Eliza Hunt from second to cut the deficit down to two. Rieg kept the game alive and advanced McQueeny to second with a single. The winning run came to the plate and lined out to center field, ending the doubleheader.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah hosts Marymount next Saturday in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
