Softball Completes Game Two Comeback; Hornets Split with Marymount

WINCHESTER, Va. - With a 7-5 win in game two, the Shenandoah University softball team split with Marymount University at home on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Hornets (3-3) trailed in the latter game of the doubleheader but used five runs combined between the fourth and fifth innings to take the win. The Saints (2-4) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning of game one, claiming the victory 7-6.

GAME ONE

RECAP

In the top half of the first, a lead-off double followed by a triple to right field quickly put Marymount up 1-0. A throw to the pitcher for SU resulted in an error which scored the second run of the inning for the visitors.

An error, walk, and single by Rachael Blumenschine loaded the bases for Shenandoah in the bottom of the first with two outs. A groundout to first left the bases full, ending the inning, and keeping Shenandoah down by two.

After a perfect top half of the second for Cadence Rieg and the Hornets defense, Sarah Medellin led off the bottom half of the frame with a double. Paige Eagleton singled, advancing Rieg to third. This allowed Allison McQueeney to get a single to first base and score Medellin, cutting the deficit in half.

An RBI double in the third and a two-RBI single in the fourth assisted the Saints in adding to their lead. They led 5-1 in the middle of the fourth.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, Makayla Cox drew a walk and took second on a single by Blumenschine. Brenna Westwood singled up the middle which drove in Cox, starting a two-out rally for the Hornets. Taylor Smith scored Blumenschine with a hit up the middle, adding SU's third run of the game.

Eagleton added another hit up the middle for Shenandoah, scoring Westwood, to bring SU within one. The Hornets then gained the lead for the first time on a single by McQueeney to center field which added two more runs. Shenandoah ended the fifth inning with five runs and held a 6-5 advantage.
Neither team was able to score in the sixth inning. Marymount stepped to the plate in the seventh, trailing by one, and easily tied the game with two straight hits to begin the frame. A sacrifice bunt with one out scored a runner from third, giving the Saints a 7-6 lead. With two runners on in the seventh and one out, Shenandoah struck out and popped up for the final outs of game one.

RECAP

A two-out, two-run home run by Marymount gave them a 2-0 lead in the first. Shenandoah cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning on a single down the right field line by Cadence Rieg for an RBI.

In the third inning, Marymount went up by two, 3-1, on a wild pitch with bases loaded. In the same at-bat, a groundout to the shortstop allowed another run to cross the plate, as the Saints took a 4-1 lead.

Makayla Cox doubled in the bottom of the third to get a runner on base for SU. Taylor Smith and Ella Montgomery reached on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, to load the bags. Sarah Medellin drew one of her two walks to bring Cox home and cut the deficit back in half.

In the bottom of the fourth, after Marymount added another run, Allison McQueeny scored on an RBI from Rieg and Taylor Smith delivered a two-rbi hit later in the inning, tying the game at five. Shenandoah added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Lexie Reid scored on a single up the middle by McQueeney.

Smith pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning, putting SU back in the win column after a three-game skid.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah travels to Raleigh, North Carolina next weekend for the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. The action begins Saturday afternoon against Berry College (Ga.)
