WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team secured its second consecutive victory in dramatic fashion, defeating Marymount 11-10 in double overtime. Jake Green completed his hat trick with the game-winning goal off an assist from Dylan Foughty, sending the Hornets' fans home in celebration.
The Hornets (2-2) had strong offensive performances, with Cody Griffis and Green both recording hat tricks. Josh Boonshaft contributed two goals, while Clark Harrity, Sam Poster, and Dillon Bakhsh each added one to round out the scoring. Shenandoah recorded five assists on the day, led by Boonshaft with two, while Foughty, Poster, and Green added one each.
Defensively, Aaron Coombs led the Hornets with two caused turnovers, while Jason Forchetti picked up a game-high five ground balls. The Hornets held the edge in caused turnovers (9-5), though the Saints had a slight advantage in ground balls (25-23). Forchetti played a key role at the faceoff circle, going 10-for-16, as Shenandoah won the faceoff battle 13-10. In goal, Mark Isabelle made 12 saves, including three in the two overtime periods, to help secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Shenandoah won the opening faceoff and immediately pushed the tempo, with Matt Daniel and Green firing early shots that sailed high and wide. The Hornets' defense made an early impact as Zack Dobson forced a turnover on Marymount's first possession, but Shenandoah was unable to capitalize. Green, Daniel, and Bakhsh continued to test the Saints' defense, but their shots missed the target before a shot clock violation resulted in a turnover.
Midway through the first quarter, the Saints tried to take advantage of a failed clear attempt by the Hornets, but Isabelle kep the ball out of the net. However, the Saints scored twice on back-to-back possessions, taking a 2-0 lead with four minutes remaining. Off the ensuing faceoff, Bakhsh weaved through defenders and rifled a shot past the goalkeeper to put Shenandoah on the board. However, Marymount responded immediately with another goal, carrying a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
Shenandoah wasted no time closing the gap as Griffis opened the second quarter with his first goal of the night off an assist from Boonshaft. Moments later, Marymount was assessed a penalty, and the Hornets capitalized on the man-up opportunity, as Green buried the equalizer. The Saints briefly regained the lead after forcing a turnover, but Shenandoah answered yet again. Green netted his second goal of the game to tie it at 4-4.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Boonshaft scored his second goal of the season to give the Hornets their first lead at 5-4. However, Marymount quickly responded to knot the score at 5-5 heading into halftime.
The Hornets opened the third quarter with another quick goal, as Griffis finished off a pass from Boonshaft to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Forchetti won the next faceoff, and after an initial missed shot, Harrity found the back of the net off an assist from Poster. Marymount responded with two consecutive goals, tying the game at 7-7 with under six minutes to play in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth, Marymount took an 8-7 lead after a saved shot attempt from Bakhsh. The Saints extended their lead to 9-7 with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Facing a two-goal deficit, Forchetti won the faceoff but turned the ball over. The Hornets' defense stepped up, forcing a shot clock violation and regaining possession.
Poster capitalized on the opportunity with an unassisted goal, bringing the Hornets within one. Isabelle made two key saves to keep the deficit at one, and Boonshaft tied the game at 9-9 with his second goal of the night. Marymount was assessed a penalty on the play, giving Shenandoah an immediate possession. Griffis took advantage, completing his hat trick on the man-up opportunity with an assist from Green, putting the Hornets ahead 10-9 with under three minutes remaining.
Shenandoah had a chance to extend the lead but missed two shots. Marymount took advantage, scoring the equalizer with just 20 seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Hornets fired six shots but were unable to convert. Meanwhile, Isabelle made two critical saves to keep the game tied, forcing a second overtime.
Marymount won the faceoff to start the second overtime and fired two shots wide before Isabelle made his final save of the game. Coombs forced a crucial turnover, giving Shenandoah one last chance. With the shot clock winding down, Green's shot hit the post, but the ball bounced to Marymount. Boonshaft chased down a defender, secured the ball, and found Green, who initially had his shot blocked. Griffis scooped up the loose ball and quickly dished it to Foughty, who found Green for the game-winning goal, sealing the 11-10 victory.

Shenandoah has now won eight straight games against Marymount. The Hornets will be back in action at home on Saturday for a non-conference matchup against Capital. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
