RECAP

In her first appearance of the season, Meghan Gaskins struck out two batters and left two runners stranded in the top of the first. Shenandoah capitalized on Gaskins' early success, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Cadence Rieg.

Gaskins pitched a perfect second inning and allowed one base runner in the third inning as SU continued to lead, 1-0. Arcadia started the fourth with a single back up the middle, but the runner was erased on a steal attempt, with catcher Sarah Medellin throwing her out.

Medellin led off for the Hornets in the fourth and singled to left field. Lexie Reid, pinch-running for Medellin, scored on the next at-bat, as Danielle McNeill bunted for a single and a throwing error by the Knights allowed Reid to score from first. McNeill scored two batters later on a groundout, with SU leading 3-0 through four.

Gaskins rounded out her day in the circle in the fifth, forcing three outs in four batters faced in the inning.

Rieg and Makayla Cox reached base to start the bottom of the fifth for SU. Rachael Blumenschine loaded the bases for SU, as Rieg beat out a tag at third. The first-year then scored from third on an RBI single by Paige Eagleton. Two costly errors by Arcadia let the Hornets take a 6-0 lead as Eagleton and Blumenschine both scored.

Each team added a run in the sixth inning, with Allison McQueeney scoring for SU for the 7-1 lead heading into the seventh.

In the seventh, the Hornets retired the first two batters, bringing the Knights to their final out. With two outs, three straight singles loaded the bases for the Knights. A walk and a wild pitch scored two runs, with Shenandoah still leading, 7-3. The potential third out was dropped in the outfield, allowing two more runs for Arcadia. With the go-ahead run at the plate, the Hornets put Rieg in the circle. Rieg punched out the final batter on a full count.

Shenandoah scored the first run of the contest as Taylor Smith singled to right field, scoring McQueeney. Methodist tied the game in the bottom of the second with a single, scoring a runner from third.

In the top of the third, SU broke the tie on a double to left field by Cox, driving in Rieg for the go-ahead score.

Following a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the fourth, SU extended its lead to 3-1 as Rieg scored on a wild pitch. Rieg reached base to lead off the inning on a dropped fly ball by the Monarchs. Methodist doubled in the bottom of the fifth, cutting its deficit down to one.

Leading off the top of the seventh, Rieg doubled to left field and advanced on a throwing error by the Monarchs. The very next batter, Cox, hit an RBI groundout, bringing Rieg home, and doubling the Hornets' lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, and with two outs, Methodist made it a 4-3 ball game on a double to left. The Hornets intentionally walked the next batter, putting the game-winning run on first. A passed ball then pushed the go-ahead run into scoring position. Taylor Smith forced a groundout to the shortstop, capping off the win.
