Hornets Defeated by Haverford

CLEARWATER, Fl. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Haverford College on Monday afternoon, 16-5, in a non-conference neutral site contest.

The Hornets (3-2) and Fords (6-1) were tied, 2-2, at the end of the first before the Fords pulled away with seven unanswered goals in the second.

The Hornets won the opening draw control and rushed downfield to get the opening shot on goal which was saved. The Fords took the save and transitioned to the other side of the field, scoring just over two minutes into the game.

Goalie Madison Perry made two back-to-back saves minutes later to keep the Hornets within one. However, a Shenandoah turnover led to Haverford scoring its second goal of the quarter and forcing the Hornets to use an early timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, SU's Julianna Fohner forced a turnover, with the defense then causing a failed clear attempt for the Fords. The two turnovers allowed Emily Ransom to score the first goal for Shenandoah. Ransom's goal gives her a new single-season career high with 10 goals on the season, just five games in.

Shenandoah's offense continued to pressure Haverford in the final moments of the first, as Ayla Jantz tied the game at two in the final minute of the opening frame. A late green card by SU allowed Haverford to break the tie with a man-up goal early in the second. The Fords tallied two more goals in the first three minutes of the second, as they led 5-2.

Haverford added four more goals in the second quarter, taking a 9-2 advantage into the second half. The Fords' defense held SU to two shots in the second while forcing four turnovers.

In the third quarter, Maddie Gaboury made two saves in the first ten minutes of action. The Hornets broke the 7-0 run by Haverford as Alyssa Webster assisted Jantz for her second goal of the afternoon. Moments later Jaelyn Hawes cut the deficit down to five with 3:29 remaining in the third.

The Fords added four more goals before Shenandoah struck again. Amy Bell tallied on a free position shot at the halfway point of the fourth. Haverford added three more goals in the final seven minutes of play.

Fohner had a game-high five caused turnovers, marking the second consecutive game with at least five caused turnovers for the senior. Perry and Gaboury combined for eight saves in the game.

The Hornets return to the field this Wednesday for a game versus No. 3 Franklin & Marshall at 10 a.m. in Clearwater, Florida.
