Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 3 Franklin & Marshall in Hard-Fought Battle, 11–8

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team put up a strong fight against No. 3 Franklin and Marshall College on Wednesday morning but ultimately fell 11–8 in non-conference action in Florida.

The Hornets (3–3) jumped out to a 4–0 lead early and held an 8–7 advantage in the fourth quarter. However, the Diplomats (5–0) closed the game with four unanswered goals in the final eight minutes to remain undefeated.

Shenandoah struck first before Franklin & Marshall could register a shot on goal, as Ainsley Buckner netted her third goal of the season. Madison Perry then made a key save on the Diplomats' first shot attempt, and following the stop, SU drew a free-position attempt. Alex Ripkin capitalized, burying the shot to give the Hornets a 2–0 lead seven minutes into the game.

Ripkin nearly added another goal moments later, but her shot was saved. However, Ayla Jantz scooped up the loose ball and found the back of the net for Shenandoah's third goal. An Emily Ransom shot was saved but the ball snuck past the Diplomats, adding a fourth goal for SU, giving the team a commanding 4–0 lead in the first quarter. Franklin & Marshall managed to score late in the period, but Shenandoah maintained a 4–1 lead after one.

In the second quarter, SU looked to extend its lead, but shots from Amy Bell and Buckner were turned away by the Diplomats' goalkeeper. Those saves fueled a Franklin & Marshall comeback, as the nationally ranked team scored three consecutive goals to tie the game at 4–4.

First-year Kaitlin Clements put Shenandoah back in front with 1:22 remaining in the half, but Franklin & Marshall responded with two quick goals in the final 25 seconds to take a 6–5 lead into the break.

The third quarter featured strong defensive efforts on both sides. Perry made two more key saves for the Hornets, keeping the game within reach. Midway through the quarter, the Diplomats picked up a green card, giving SU a man-up opportunity. Sofia Albi capitalized on the advantage, scoring the only goal of the period to tie the game at 6–6 heading into the fourth.

Early in the fourth quarter, a Shenandoah foul gave Franklin & Marshall a free-position attempt, which the Diplomats converted to reclaim a one-goal lead. SU immediately responded, winning the ensuing draw control and rushing down the field, where Ransom scored just 23 seconds later to tie the game. Clements won another draw control for Shenandoah, and Ransom struck again 62 seconds later, giving the Hornets an 8–7 advantage.

Despite SU's momentum, Franklin & Marshall closed the game on a 4–0 run over the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Perry made a season-high nine saves in the loss. Ripkin collected a team-high three ground balls, while Buckner and Ransom each finished with two points.
