Hornets Win Game One in Split at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Mary Baldwin University on Thursday afternoon, winning the opener 6–2 before falling 11–10 on a walk-off home run in the nightcap.

The Hornets (6–6) powered past the Flying Squirrels (9–5) in game one with a six-run third inning. In game two, SU rallied to take a 10–8 lead in the seventh inning behind back-to-back triples, but Mary Baldwin responded with a three-run home run in the bottom half to claim the win.

RECAP

Gaskins retired the Mary Baldwin lineup in order in the first inning and worked around a leadoff single in the second.

The Hornets broke the game open in the third, starting with a double from Medellin followed by a single from Paige Eagleton. Allison McQueeney drove in the first run of the game, and Makayla Cox added another RBI single.

With the bases loaded, Smith cleared them with a three-run double, extending the lead to 4–0. Medellin and Brenna Westwood added back-to-back RBI doubles, pushing SU's lead to 6–0.

Mary Baldwin answered with a two-run homer in the fourth, cutting the deficit to four. Gaskins allowed just three more hits over her final 2.1 innings before Smith entered in relief, forcing a game-ending double play.

RECAP

Shenandoah took an early 1–0 lead in the first after Blumenschine walked and scored on a sacrifice fly from Smith.

In the fourth, Medellin doubled SU's lead with a solo home run, but Mary Baldwin responded in the bottom half with a seven-run inning, capitalizing on three walks and a pair of doubles to take a 7–2 lead.

Shenandoah stormed back in the fifth, cutting the deficit to one with a five-run frame. Medellin drove in a run with a single, and McNeill followed with an RBI double. McQueeney's two-run double and a Blumenschine RBI double made it a 7–6 game.

Mary Baldwin added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, making it 8–6 entering the final inning.

SU's offense responded again, as Westwood led off the seventh with a single before McNeill and McQueeney ripped back-to-back triples to give the Hornets a 10–8 lead.

However, Mary Baldwin capitalized on a Shenandoah fielding error in the bottom of the seventh, keeping the game alive with a two-out single before launching a three-run home run to walk it off.

Shenandoah begins ODAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
