Softball Falls on Walk Off Grand Slam in Game Two; Knights Sweep Hornets

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by Southern Virginia University on the road on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Knights (6-10) won game one, 9-5, before walking off game two over the Hornets (6-10), 8-5, on a grand slam in extra innings.

GAME ONE

Pitching Decisions:

RECAP
Shenandoah led off the game with a solo home run by Cadence Rieg. The Hornets followed it up with a Rachael Blumenschine double to left center with Blumenschine scoring on a single up the middle by Makayla Cox. The Knights tied the game at two on a double to center field in the bottom of the first.

SVU added another run in the bottom of the second, taking a one-run lead. Blumenschine tied the game at three with a solo shot in the third. The Knights were sat down in order in the third with SU taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a bases-loaded single by Blumenschine.

A lead-off single, followed by a pair of walks, loaded the bases for the Knights in the bottom of the fifth. The home team tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, before a single up the middle scored two more runs, giving them a 6-4 lead.

Southern Virginia hit a three-run home run in the sixth, taking a 9-4 lead. Paige Eagleton scored for the Hornets in the seventh on a Knights' error but a double play during the next at-bat ended the game.

RECAP

Shenandoah was retired in order to begin the game, which allowed the Knights to take a 1-0 lead after one on a sacrifice fly. The score remained the same until the Knights doubled their lead on a passed ball in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Brenna Snyder led off the inning with a single, with Lillie Harrison pinch running. Harrison scored on an RBI double by Taylor Smith. Danielle McNeill was hit by a pitch, which put two on base for Shenandoah.

With two on, Cadence Rieg delivered a three-run blast to left field, giving SU a 4-2 advantage. The Hornets pitched a perfect sixth inning as they held the two-run advantage heading to the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights tied the contest at four with two singles up the middle. Shenandoah took a 5-4 lead in the extra innings as Lexie Reid scored on a wild pitch. However, in the bottom of the eighth, SVU won the game on a walk-off grand slam.

UP NEXT

The Hornets travel to Roanoke for an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
