Webster’s Late Goal Lifts Shenandoah Over SUNY Geneseo, 14–13

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team secured a thrilling 14–13 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday evening, winning on a late goal in non-conference action.

The Hornets (5–3) found the game-winning score with 1:38 remaining, as Alyssa Webster capitalized on a perfectly executed play to edge the Knights (2–5).

RECAP

Shenandoah struck first after Talia Maria won the opening draw control and SU drew a foul, setting up an early free-position attempt. Emily Ransom converted for her 14th goal of the season, giving the Hornets a 1–0 lead.

Victoria Wunderlich then forced a turnover, allowing Shenandoah to transition quickly down the field, where Addison Harmel found the net off an assist from Amy Bell. Less than two minutes later, Jaelyn Hawes added a free-position goal to extend the lead to 3–0.

Geneseo responded with two goals, but Ainsley Buckner kept Shenandoah in front with her 10th goal of the season, making it 4–2. Following a green card on the Knights, Buckner added another goal on the man-up advantage, giving the Hornets a 5–2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Ayla Jantz pushed Shenandoah ahead by four early in the second, but Geneseo responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit in half. Jantz scored again late in the quarter, and Alex Ripkin added a goal in the final minute to give SU an 8–4 halftime lead.

Ripkin opened the third quarter with another goal, but Geneseo controlled the rest of the frame, scoring seven unanswered goals to take an 11–9 lead heading into the fourth.

Shenandoah battled back quickly, tying the game at 11 within the first six minutes of the final period with goals from Sofia Albi and Ripkin. After winning the next draw control, Ransom converted another free-position shot to put the Hornets back in front. Two minutes later, Ransom completed her hat trick off an assist from Albi, doubling Shenandoah's lead.

Geneseo cut the deficit to one with 4:11 remaining before tying the game at 13 on a man-down goal.

A turnover deep in the Knights' defensive zone gave possession back to Shenandoah, prompting a timeout. Coming out of the break, Buckner found Webster wide open in front of the cage, where she maneuvered past the goalie and buried the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining.

Harmel sealed the win by causing a last-second turnover.

Ripkin and Ransom each recorded hat tricks in the victory. Maria led the team with seven draw controls and two ground balls.

Shenandoah returns to ODAC play on Saturday, hosting Averett at 4 p.m. for senior day.
