Women's Tennis Stings Yellow Jackets, 6-1

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team earned a decisive 6-1 ODAC win at home on Sunday afternoon versus Randolph-Macon College.

The Hornets (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) won five singles matches and a pair during doubles. SU has now defeated the Yellow Jackets (5-3, 2-3) in three straight meetings against the teams.

Despite dropping the match on doubles court one, Shenandoah earned the team point with wins on court two and three. On court two, Erin Talko and Allison Cherwien won 6-1 as Kendra Gillette and Leigha Montrief won on court three, 6-2.

Tanea Spruill recovered from a loss in doubles and won 6-2, 6-0 on court one in singles. Cherwein and Gillette swept their opponents in two sets. Cherwein was the third match to conclude with a 6-3, 6-2 win as Gillette followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Talko took the first set of her singles match, 6-3, but fell in set two. The junior responded with a 6-1 set three, taking the match.

Montrief came up short in a hard fought first set, 6-7, but tied the match up with a 6-2 second set. Montrief walked away with the win after winning the third set, 1 (11) - 0 (9).

Shenandoah host Washington and Lee on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in conference play.
