Softball Splits with Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team split a road ODAC doubleheader against Randolph College on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 5-2, before falling short in a game two comeback, 3-2.

A three-run first inning propelled the Hornets (8-12, 2-4 ODAC) to the game one victory, but the WildCats (4-18, 3-3) rebounded with a three-run sixth inning in game two, helping them earn the split.

GAME ONE

RECAP

The Hornets first two batters of the game grounded out but Makayla Cox hit a two-out RBI double, scoring Cadence Rieg for the game's first run. The Hornets then loaded the bases with a walk and hit by pitch. With the bases full, Taylor Smith and Cox each scored on a two-out error by the WildCats.

Meghan Gaskins forced the WildCats to line out to center field, ending the first inning, and leaving the bases full after a two-hit bottom of the first. Each team went down in order in the second and were held to one hit in the third.

In the fourth, Shenandoah extended its lead to 4-0 on an RBI double by Sydnee Flores, scoring Danielle McNeill. In the bottom of the frame, Randolph cut into its deficit by two with a single to right field.

Cox added an RBI in the seventh inning, pushing the lead back to three for SU. Gaskins reentered the circle in the bottom of the seventh and allowed no hits and forced a game-ending double play.

RECAP

Shenandoah and Randolph exited the first inning scoreless after SU threw a runner out at the plate. Each team went the next three innings without any hits with Randolph picking up the lone base runner on a walk during the stretch.

Daneille McNeill's 100th career hit finally broke the Hornets hitless streak in the fifth inning. Becca Sexton, the starter for SU, continued to throw a gem with a perfect fifth inning.

However, Randolph finally broke through in the sixth inning with three runs scoring on a wild pitch, sacrifice fly, and single.

Taylor Smith led off the top of the seventh with a single followed by a double by Brenna Snyder. McNeill was hit by pitch to load the bases with one out. Lexie Reid, pinch running for Smith, scored on a walk drawn by Paige Eagleton.

With one outs and bases still full, Sydnee Flores hit a sacrifice fly, which scored pinch runner Janelle Sargent. With the tying and go-ahead run on bases, Randolph forced a game-ending ground out.

Shenandoah host Lynchburg in an ODAC doubleheader tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
