Hornets Net Marlins in Lopsided 21-1 ODAC Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team dominated Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon, 21-1, in an ODAC road game.

The Hornets (11-5, 7-1 ODAC) scored 12 unanswered goals to begin the game before the Marlins (8-8, 4-5) were able to score in the third. Senior Amy Bell collected her 100th career point in the win.

RECAP

The Marlins saved the first two shots on the goal, but following the second save, Addison Harmel scooped up the loose ball, which led to Ayla Jantz scoring the game's opening goal. Sofia Albi assisted on the second goal of the game as Emily Ransom found the back of the net after the Hornets forced a VWU clock violation.

In the last minute of the first quarter, Shenandoah scored twice in 30 seconds with Ainsley Buckner tallying the first and Harmel picking up the second.

The Marlins picked up an early foul in the second, giving Shenandoah a free-position attempt. The Hornets put the ball in the stick of Amy Bell, who fired a shot past the Marlins for her 100th career point and a 5-0 SU lead.

The next two Shenandoah goals came on free-position shots with Buckner and Harmel each scoring. Directly after the Harmel goal, Talia Maria won the draw control, allowing Bell to pick up her second goal of the afternoon.

Prior to the next SU goal, Madison Perry made a save, and Alex Ripkin caused a turnover, keeping the shutout intact. The Hornets took the strong defense and turned it into a free-position goal from Buckner, putting SU up 9-0 at the half.

Shenandoah gained a 12-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the third quarter as Harmel, Ransom, and Haley Sullivan added to SU's total. VWU's only goal came with 6:48 left in the third on a free-position shot.

The Marlins only had the ball one more time in the quarter, with the Hornets continuing to put pressure on the home team. Allyssa Webster scored back-to-back goals and Jaelyn Hawes found the back of the net late in the frame, putting the Hornets up 15-1.

Shenandoah struck six times in the fourth, after not scoring for the first five minutes of the period. Kaitlin Clements, Ripkin, Jantz, and Harmel each scored in the fourth.

Buckner led the way with a six-point game while Jantz and Ransom ended the day with four points. Buckner also collected 10 draw controls in the win.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah heads to Randolph-Macon this Saturday at 1 p.m. for its final road game of the regular season.
