Hornets Hang On to Split with UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team split its doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington on Friday, earning a 5-4 extra-inning victory in game two. The win marks the Hornets' 17th of the season, the most in a single season under head coach Courtney Allen.

Sarah Medellin drove in the go-ahead RBI in the top of the eighth inning of game two for the Hornets (17-17), after the Eagles (10-24) won game one, 6-4.

RECAP

A five-pitch walk put Allison McQueeney on base to start the game. McQueeney came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cadence Rieg

Mary Washington was retired in order during the bottom of the first by Becca Sexton. However, the Eagles came back to take the lead, 2-1, in the second inning on four hits, three of which came with two outs.

The Eagles extended their lead in the third inning on a double steal and a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored a runner from second. UMW took a 6-1 lead in the fourth with two more runs.

Rachael Blumenschine hit a single in the fifth inning, scoring Kara Watkins, to chip into the deficit. The score remained the same until Kelly Hartman hit a one-out double in the seventh inning, scoring Lillie Harrison and Paige Eagleton. However, the Hornets stranded the tying run at the plate with a groundout and a lineout to end the game.

RECAP

An error by the Eagles allowed Brenna Snyder to reach base in the first inning. The Hornets continued to capitalize on the error as Cadence Rieg drove in the game's opening run on a two-out RBI double down the left field line.

Ella Montgomery began the second inning with a triple on the very first pitch of the frame. Sarah Medellin hit an infield single that kept Montgomery at third. Luckily for the Hornets, Montgomery crossed the plate for the 2-0 lead on a wild pitch.

After the Eagles cut the lead to one, Shenandoah extended the advantage out to 4-1 on singles from Snyder and Danielle McNeill in the fifth inning. UMW quickly tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth as seven batters came to the plate and collected four hits, plus an error by SU.

Each team left the go-ahead run on base in the seventh inning, with the Eagles sending the game to extras on a 5-3 double play turned by the Hornets' defense.

In the eighth inning, McNeill scored the eventual game-winning run as Medellin hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning, with a full count, the Eagles hit into another double play, this time ending the game and giving the Hornets the win.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah heads to Bridgewater on Tuesday for its final road doubleheader of the regular season.
