Women's Lacrosse Locks Up No. 2 Seed in ODAC Tournament

Hornets Defeat Maroons for First Time Since 2018

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team clinched the No. 2 seed in the 2025 ODAC Tournament on Wednesday night with a 12-9 ODAC win at home over No. 20 Roanoke College.

The Hornets' (12-6, 8-2 ODAC) win marks the program's first over the Maroons (11-6, 8-2) since 2018 and first at home since 2013.

RECAP

Roanoke caused a turnover on Shenandoah's first possession and came down the field to score less than two minutes into the game. Ainsley Buckner, who collected her 300th career draw control in the win, won the ensuing draw control and tied the game at one on an assist by Amy Bell.

Alex Ripkin scored the next two goals of the game to put Shenandoah up 3-1 in the middle of the first. Late in the frame, the Maroons rallied back to tie the game again, but the Hornets answered with Ripkin's third goal of the first. With six seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Roanoke tied the game at four.

Each team's defense stood tall in the early goings of the second quarter with four combined turnovers and a save by Maddie Gaboury. Roanoke broke the standstill and took a 5-4 lead with 8:51 remaining.

Nearly four minutes later, Shenandoah evened the game back up with Ayla Jantz scoring a man-up goal. Ripken picked up her fourth goal of the afternoon to give the Hornets the lead once again.

Following a draw control by Talia Maria, the Hornets drew a foul, allowing Sofia Albi to score on a free-position shot late in the first half. Similarly to Buckner, Maria reached a career milestone for draw controls with her 100th.

Jantz struck early in the third quarter to put Shenandoah up by three, 8-5. Gaboury made two key saves to keep the lead where it was, but the Maroons cut their deficit back down to two with just over four minutes left in the third. Luckily for SU, Emily Ransom and Jantz ended the third with two more goals for the home squad.

In the fourth quarter, Roanoke outscored Shenandoah 4-2, with Jantz and Kate Vendemia picking up the two for Shenandoah. Gaboury made four key saves in the final frame, including one with 1:36 left. Shenandoah successfully sealed the victory as Roanoke picked up a green card in the final 75 seconds of the game, allowing SU to run out the clock.
