Women's Lacrosse Advances to First ODAC Championship Since 2013

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team advances to the ODAC Championship for the first time since 2013 after defeating No. 3 Roanoke College 10-9 at home on Friday afternoon in the semifinals.

The Hornets (13-6) led 10-5 through three quarters, but the Maroons (12-7) were able to mount a comeback and score four unanswered in the final frame. Thanks to three late cards on the Maroons, SU was able to halt the comeback attempt and walk away with the win.

RECAP

In the first five minutes of the game Roanoke had three great looks at the net, with a shot hitting the post and two whinding up in the stick of starting goalie Maddie Gaboury. At the other end of the field, Amy Bell connected with Ayla Jantz for the first goal of the semifinal game. Minutes later Roanoke had another shot hit the pipe but recovered the groundball and tied the game at one.

The Maroons quickly took a 2-1 lead. For the Hornets, Ainsley Buckner won the ensuing draw control and found a wide open Emily Ransom. Ransom raced into SU's offensive territory and tied the game in the blink of an eye.

Gaboury stopped a shot early in the second but the Maroons got past the goalie for a 3-2 lead two minutes into the quarter. However, Shenandoah once again quickly responded with Jantz' second of the game. The Hornets went up 5-3 with back-to-back goals by Bell and Ransom.

Bell, along with Sofia Albi, scored two more goals for Shenandoah, as Roanoke also added a tally, with SU leading 7-4.

The Hornets poured on three more goals in the third as Buckner scored a pair and Bell added her third of the game and her 23rd of the season. A foul by the Hornets led to the Maroons cutting into the deficit, making it 10-5 at the end of the quarter.

Less than five minutes into the fourth, Roanoke scored two goals, 31 seconds apart, cutting the deficit down to three. Shenandoah had a free-position shot go high, which eventual led to Roanoke adding another goal. The Shenandoah led was then cut to one, with Roanoke's fourth goal of the quarter with 2:46 remaining in regulation.

Buckner won her tenth draw control of the game, allowing Shenandoah to chew the clock. As time was shrinking, Roanoke picked up three cards, which helped keep the ball in the Hornets' possession, and locked up the tournament win.

Bell led the Hornets with three goals and five points, as Buckner, Jantz, and Ransom each had multiple goals. Addison Harmel and Julianna Fohner led the defensive side of the ball with two caused turnovers. Gaboury picked up the win in net and made nine saves in progress.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah travels down to top-seeded Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the ODAC Championship. The winner of the game with receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
