Softball's Bats Come Alive in Game One Win; Hornets Split with Vixens

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team won game one, 11-1, in a split of an ODAC doubleheader at home against Sweet Briar College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (11-15, 5-7 ODAC) scored six runs in the fourth inning in the 11-1 game one victory, which ended in five innings. The Vixens (15-15, 2-10) answered with a 1-0 win in game two, as both starting pitchers pitched a complete game.

GAME ONE

RECAP

A leadoff hit by pitch turned into a runner in scoring position with no outs for the Vixens in the top of the first. Meghan Gaskins got out of the early jam with a strikeout and two infield pop-ups. Gaskins then got the Vixens to leave the bases loaded in the second on a lineout to Brenna Snyder at first.

In the bottom of the second, Snyder drew a leadoff walk. Snyder moved to third on a hit by pitch and another walk during the next two at-bats. Rachael Blumenschine stayed patient at the plate and reached on a walk, scoring Snyder. The Hornets then took a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Allison McQueeney.

Sweet Briar scored its only run of the game on a double down the left field line in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning, steals by Cadence Rieg and Makayla Cox put runners in scoring position for SU with no outs. Rieg scored the first run of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Snyder.

Hannah Evans and Kara Watkins loaded the bases on back-to-back walks. Cox successfully crossed the plate as Kelly Hartman was hit by pitch. Shenandoah jumped out to a 5-1 lead on a single through the left side by Blumenschine.

Rieg kickstarted the bottom of the fourth with a double before coming home on Cox's first career home run, putting SU in the driver's seat, 7-1. After two consecutive outs, Watkins and Hartman delivered a pair of doubles to extend the lead.

Blumenschine singled one at-bat later to put SU up by eight, scoring Hartman. Following an infield single and stolen base by McQueeney, McNeill hit a single of her own to drive in the final two runs for SU and put them up 11-1.

Rieg, who entered the circle in the fourth, retired three of the four batters she faced in the fifth to end the game early.

RECAP

The only run of the contest came in the top of the first with the Vixens hitting two singles and a sacrifice bunt in the inning. Allison McQueeney hit a single to leadoff the bottom of the first and then stole second. McQueeney was able to take third on a ground out but was was stranded there as SU struckout to end the inning.

In innings two through five, Becca Sexton record 12 outs in 13 batters faced, allowing just two hits to keep her team within one. In that same span SU recorded three hits but the Vixens were able to hold the Hornets scoreless.

Sexton continued to deal through the sixth and seventh, allowing just one hit and keeping the Vixens from scoring another run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brenna Snyder hit a leadoff single, putting the tying run on board. Paige Eagleton, pinch running for Snyder, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Evans. With the tying run in scoring position, Sweet Briar recorded the second out of the inning with a close call at first base. The tying run was stranded at third as the Vixens forced a fly out to left field to end the game.
