Buckner Sets Program Record for Career Draw Controls in Midweek Split

Hornets Defeated by No. 6 Salisbury, Defeat Vixens in Nightcap

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team hosted No. 6 Salisbury University in a non-conference game, falling 13-11, before defeating Sweet Briar College, 24-0, in an ODAC game in the nightcap.

The Hornets (9-5, 5-1 ODAC) trailed late in the game versus the Sea Gulls (9-3) and cut the game to two in the final four minutes, but the nationally ranked visitors held Shenandoah to just one shot on goal in the final minutes to seal the win. In the evening conference game, Shenandoah scored 11 goals in the first nine minutes of the game versus the Vixens (0-9, 0-6), with 13 different players scoring for SU.

In the first game of the day, Ainsley Buckner set the program record for career draw control wins, surpassing the previous record of 260 set by Shenandoah Athletics Hall of Famer, Samantha Sisson.

SALISBURY RECAP

An early save by the Sea Gulls led to a good clear and the first goal of the game, as the visitors struck just over two minutes in. Less than a minute later, Alex Ripkin scored her 25th goal of the season to tie the contest. Talia Maria won the following draw control, and Ayla Jantz picked up the go-ahead goal with an assist from Ainsley Buckner.

The next pair of Shenandoah shots hit the post and were saved, allowing Salisbury to even the game at two with just over 8:30 left in the first. Salisbury ended the first quarter with three more goals, taking a 5-2 lead.

The visitors added two more goals, for a 7-2 lead, just minutes into the second. Emily Ransom scored to cut the deficit down to four, following a save by Madison Perry. With just over two minutes left in the half, Kate Vendemia found Jantz for her second goal of the game. Despite back-to-back goals for the Hornets, Salisbury scored one more before the half expired to take an 8-4 lead into the break.

Early in the third quarter, Ransom scooped up a ground ball off a Salisbury turnover and scored on the same possession. A foul by Salisbury set up a free position attempt for the Hornets, with Ransom capitalizing on the attempt for Shenandoah's sixth goal of the afternoon.

In the middle of the third, Salisbury extended its lead with three unanswered tallies for an 11-6 lead. The Sea Gulls put another goal on the board, but only led by four at the end of the quarter as Jantz and Kaitlin Clements scored for the Hornets.

In the fourth, a possession stayed with the Hornets following a shot that missed high. The Hornets took advantage of the second chance and added another goal by Jantz, with Buckner picking up an assist.

Salisbury responded with a goal of its own, pushing the lead back to four. Shenandoah chipped into the deficit on a free position goal by Amy Bell with 5:36 left. Less than two minutes later, Ransom scored another free position goal for the Hornets.

Trailing by two late in the game, the Hornets kept control of the ball but were only able to get one last shot on goal as the Sea Gulls held on for the win.

SWEET BRIAR RECAP

Ainsley Buckner won the first four draw controls of the game as Alyssa Webster, Jaelyn Hawes, and Taryn Jantz scored for the Hornets in the first 80 seconds of the game. Cameryn Bowker picked up an assist on the three goals.

Shenandoah led 13-0 at the end of the first with Webster adding two more goals to her total.

After beginning the first with three straight assists, Bowker scored the first two goals of the second. Rizzo added an assist on Clements' goal that made it 16-0 halfway through the second. In the final two minutes of the second quarter, Rizzo and Alex Ripkin scored, as SU led 18-0 at the half.

In the third and final quarter of the game, Shenandoah had the ball for the entire frame. In the quarter, Amy Bell, Haley Sullivan, Buckner, Bowker, and Ripkin each scored for the Hornets as they took the 24-0 victory.
