Abele Earns First Career Win in Opening Day Split

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - First-year head coach Travis Abele earned his first career victory on Friday evening with a 3-0 victory for the Shenandoah University women's volleyball team in the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg.

The Hornets (1-1) helped their new head coach pick up his first win by defeating Neumann University in the team's first game of the classic. SU then fell in the nightcap, 3-0, to Dickinson College.

NEUMANN RECAP

The Hornets took the opening set against the Knights (0-1), 25-19. The first frame began with a 5-2 lead for SU as Hannah Hylton picked up two kills and Amanda Ingrassia earned four assists during the opening stretch.

Neumann battled back, taking a 10-8 lead, but Shenandoah responded with a 5-0 run to go up by three. The Hornets didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the set, closing it out with a kill by Alana Washington on a Vanessa Rodriguez assist.

The Knights jumped in front early in the second set, but Shenandoah was able to control the lead with a 7-1 run. With SU up 21-16 off a Knights attack error, Neumann scored four straight points to pull within one. However, a kill by Ashlynn Spence and an ace from Samantha Shy quickly put the Hornets back ahead by three. Shenandoah won the set 25-22 following another kill and an attack error by Neumann.

Neumann never saw the lead in the third and final set in large part due to Shenandoah jumping ahead 4-1. Shenandoah continued to put the pressure on Neumann, taking multiple eight-point leads in the middle of the set.

The Hornets held a nine-point advantage, 21-12, following a kill by Hylton with Rodriguez providing the assist. Another attack error by the Knights ended the set and match as SU won the third frame, 25-18.

Washington led the way for Shenandoah with 10 kills, while Rodriguez had the team-high in assists with 19. Defensively, Spence and Ava Pannullo each picked up a solo block while Autumn Stroop carried the team with 20 digs.

DICKINSON RECAP

The Red Devils (1-1) took the first set 25-13, which was their largest victory of the match. In the second set, Amber Shifflett provided a kill that tied the set at four, responding to a 4-0 run by the Red Devils. Shenandoah then saw themselves with a 7-5 lead following another Shifflett kill.

Dickinson pulled ahead throughout the middle of the set, taking a 21-17 lead before forcing set point. Trailing 24-22, SU came within one point thanks to a kill from Pannullo, which was assisted by Ingrassia. However, Dickinson ended up winning the set after an attack error by the Hornets.

Despite trailing 9-2 in the early going of the third set, Shenandoah once again came within one point at 15-14 as Shifflett provided another kill in the match. However, Dickinson again went on a run to take a five-point advantage before closing out the match with a 25-21 set victory.

Hylton matched Washington's 10 kills from the first match of the day for the team-high against Dickinson, with Spence and Chillis Oke each providing three block assists.
