Women's Volleyball Swept on Final Day of Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team was swept on Saturday in two non-conference matches in the Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College. In game one, the Hornets (1-3) fell 3-0 to Gettysburg before dropping a five-set match against Grove City College to close out the classic.

GETTYSBURG RECAP

The Bullets (2-1) claimed the first set 25-20, with help from a 6-0 run to start the day. SU brought the match back to one point thanks to back-to-back kills from Hannah Hylton. The Bullets held the lead until a service ace by Susan Smith tied the set at nine, with the Hornets eventually taking a 10-9 advantage.

Gettysburg responded right away and regained the lead, keeping the Hornets at a distance and closing out the set on a 3-0 run.

The home team jumped out to a large lead early in the second set and held a 17-12 advantage midway through. However, two kills from Hylton bookended a 6-0 run for SU, giving the visitors an 18-17 lead.

Shenandoah forced set point twice on multiple attack errors by Gettysburg, but the Bullets once again used a 3-0 run to claim the second set, 28-26.

The third set was all Bullets, who jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, until a kill by Alana Washington put the Hornets on the board. The lead extended to 17 for the home team, who won the third set, 25-10.

GROVE CITY RECAP

A 25-19 win in the first set, followed by a 25-16 victory in the second, saw the Hornets take a 2-0 lead in the match. Down 2-0, the Wolverines (3-0) crawled back and forced a fifth set and eventually won the decisive set, 15-9, to remain unbeaten.

The teams traded the lead twice in the early portion of the opening set but the Hornets were able to pull ahead, 9-5, on a 6-1 run. Ashlynn Spence recorded four kills during the run and earned five of the team's first 10 points.

Amanda Ingrassia assisted on yet another kill by Spence, which gave SU a 20-12 lead. At the end of the set, a service error by the Wolverines put them at the brink of dropping the first set, with Spence the one to end the set on another kill.

Shenandoah dominated the start of the second set, taking a 9-3 lead. Ingrassia had four assists and two service aces during the team's opening run. Grove City battled back to come within one twice at 15-14 and 18-17.

Chillis Oke and Spence paired up to get a block for Shenandoah to push the lead to four before two more attack errors by the Wolverines gave the Hornets a six-point advantage. Vanessa Rodriguez set up Hylton for the final point of the set, putting Shenandoah up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, it was Grove City's turn to take a 9-3 lead. Shenandoah came right back and answered with a 6-0 run to tie the set, thanks to two kills by Spence and three Wolverine attack errors.

The teams battled back and forth, tying each other eight times in the middle of the set. With the third set tied at 18, the Wolverines took the set win on a 7-2 run.

The fourth set saw 10 ties and seven lead changes, but it was the Wolverines who came out on top, 25-22, to force the fifth set. Grove City won the final frame, 15-9, thanks to four separate 3-0 runs.

Shenandoah had 63 kills in the match, which is tied for fourth most in program history since 2009. Ingrassia had the team-high in assists with 28, with Rodriguez in second at 22.
