Women's Tennis Begins Season at Battle of the Blue Ridge

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team opened its 2025-26 season at Sweet Briar College on Saturday at the Battle of the Blue Ridge.

Olivia Guzzo highlighted the invitational for the Hornets with two dominant singles wins, opening with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Randolph's Rachel Combs before taking down Lynchburg's Kayla Kosiorek 6-2, 6-2. Atlee Hillard also went unbeaten in singles, defeating Randolph's Mikayla Smith (6-1, 6-2) and Sweet Briar's Lucia Bovard (6-2, 7-5).

Kendra Gillette added a three-set comeback win over Lynchburg's Harper Dodd, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4), while Samantha Calvert earned a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) victory against Lynchburg's Reese McAtee. Leigha Montrief picked up a pair of wins, defeating Guilford's Amy Soto (7-2) and advancing in another match via opponent retirement.

In doubles action, Shenandoah collected four victories. Guzzo and Hillard paired for a 6-3 win over Randolph's duo, while Calvert and Erin Talko earned two victories — including a 6-1 decision against Guilford.. Gillette and Montrief closed the day with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2) victory over the Quakers.

The Hornets are in Fredericksburg, Virginia, next weekend for the 2025 ITA DIII Women's Southeast Regional Championships.
