Men's Basketball Downed by W&L Behind Generals' Second Half Comeback

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team lost a midweek ODAC game 73-69 on Wednesday evening at home versus Washington and Lee University.

The Generals (12-2, 4-1 ODAC) hit the go-ahead layup with 18 seconds remaining and closed out the game with a pair of free throws to complete a comeback that erased the Hornets' (7-7, 0-5) 17-point halftime lead.

RECAP

Dorian Davis and Ellis Wright began the game with a combined eight points, which gave Shenandoah an 8-2 lead following three-pointers from each man. Seven minutes into the game, SU had a 15-point lead, 19-4, thanks to five more points from Wright and three-pointers from Joseph Baldwin and Matthew Simmons.

Shenandoah's lead grew to 18 with 6:27 left in the first half, but the Generals chipped away to cut their deficit down to 14 just minutes later. The Hornets went on a 10-4 run, capped off by a Landon Russ three-pointer, to take a 39-19 lead, their largest of the game. John Allen hit a late dunk in the half to secure a 17-point lead for SU at halftime.

Following a layup by Simmons with 18:49 left in the second half, which put SU up 45-29, the Generals went on a 26-7 run that gave them a three-point advantage with 7:35 remaining. Davis responded with a three-pointer to tie the game at 55, marking the first field goal for SU in over 10 minutes.

Washington and Lee gained a five-point lead, 60-55, and maintained an advantage despite the Hornets cutting their deficit down to one on five different occasions. With 39 ticks left on the clock, Davis was able to tie the contest, 69-69, with a free throw.

With the game tied at 69, the Generals wasted over 20 seconds off the clock and took the lead with a layup, leaving SU with 18 seconds to work with. The Hornets attempted to tie the game but missed a shot in the paint, which allowed the Generals to go down and make two free throws to seal the victory.

Wright scored a team-high 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half.

Allen posted career-highs in steals and points with three and 15, respectively.
