Men's Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener

UMW Defeats Hornets, 16-9

WINCHESTER, Va. - In the 2026 season opener, the Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team fell 16-9 at home in non-conference play to the University of Mary Washington.

The Hornets (0-1) trailed 1-0 after the first, but trailed 8-1 to the Eagles (1-0) at halftime, marking the difference in the game.

RECAP

Mary Washington scored on the first possession of the season, but Jack Dwyer made seven saves throughout the rest of the first to keep the visitors at one goal. Dwyer finished the game with 14 saves.

The Eagles tallied the first six goals of the second to grab a 7-0 lead, until Dylan Foughty recorded the first goal of the season for the Hornets, off an assist by Xavier Parker. A turnover deep in the defensive end by SU led to UMW taking an 8-1 halftime lead.

Foughty found the back of the cage for the second time in the game, five minutes into the third, following two goals by the Eagles. After Foughty's third quarter goal, UMW went on to record the next three goals for a 13-2 lead. A faceoff win for Brody McClure led to Sam Poster scoring SU's third goal of the evening, but the Eagles led 15-3 after three.

Less than five minutes into the fourth, a save by Dwyer led to Luke Petrie connecting with Ryan Eager for Eager's first career goal. Less than two minutes later, Petrie scored a goal of his own to make it 15-5.

Later in the fourth, Dylan Taylor scored the first man-up goal of the season for the Hornets off an assist from Cody Griffis. Across the final four minutes of action, after UMW's final goal of the night, first-year Noah Nolt scored three consecutive goals for a hat trick.

Nolt finished the evening with a team-high in goals and points, while Foughty and Petrie also had multi-point games. McClure led the team in groundballs with six and added 10 wins at the circle.

UP NEXT

The Hornets are home next Wednesday night for a non-conference clash with Hood College.
