Baseball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team swept its 2026 opening day with a pair of wins over Misericordia University at home on Saturday.

The Hornets (2-0) earned a 5-2 game one win before completing the sweep of the Cougars (0-2) with a 4-1 game two decision. 

GAME ONE

Winning Pitcher: Jacob Gilbert (1-0)
Save: Braden Landis (1)

The Cougars struck first with an RBI single in the first for a 1-0 early lead. For the Hornets, with two outs in the bottom of the inning, Tyler Smith delivered a three-run shot that scored Jaime Padilla and Kyle Garrett for a 3-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Jacob Gilbert pitched 5.0 innings, with two earned runs, and a pair of strikeouts in his season debut. Braden Landis entered the game in the sixth and retired the first nine batters he faced, which allowed SU to take a 5-2 lead off a Garrett two-RBI single in the eighth.

Kemper Omps and Garrett led the Hornets with two hits each.

GAME TWO

Winning Pitcher: Blaine Griffin (1-0)
Save: Liam Stewart (1)

Matt Atchley opened the scoring for the Hornets in the second with a two-run home run to right field, scoring Tyler Smith. 

Blaine Griffin went five innings in his first outing of the year, allowing no runs, two hits, and punching out three.

Shenandoah added on to its lead in the sixth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Jaime Padilla and Smith.

Liam Stewart came in to pitch for SU in the eighth inning, with the team up 4-1, and gave up no runs to secure the save.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah's next scheduled game is next Saturday at home versus Penn State Abington.
