Baseball Throws a Combined No-Hitter in Midweek Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program threw a combined no-hitter in a 13-3 non-conference home win versus Mary Baldwin University.

The Hornets (3-0) used five pitchers in the seven-inning no-hitter, while Carl Keenan and Jacob Martin each had two RBI in the first-ever meeting against the Fighting Squirrels (1-2).

RECAP

Joe Gleason earned the start for the Hornets on the mound and struck out the first six batters in order. This helped SU grab a 4-0 lead through two innings. Carl Keenan led off for Shenandoah and hit a solo home run on the first pitch he saw before Tyler Smith drove in Kyle Garrett to make it 2-0. Garrett scored Jacob Martin on a sacrifice fly in the second, while Christian Carver scored on a wild pitch.

After Mary Baldwin scored on a wild pitch, Michael Meyers entered the game and went 2.1 innings, retiring seven of the nine batters he faced. His efforts awarded him his first win of the season.

Shenandoah scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth as 12 batters came to the plate in the inning. Martin had two RBI in the inning, both occurring on walks with the bases loaded. Keenan drove in Martin on a single, marking the only run scored on a hit in the inning.

In the sixth inning, Joey Mitchell went to the mound for the Hornets and retired the side in order with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the inning, Dylan Mauzy earned his first career hit and scored Keenan on an RBI single through the right side, giving SU a 13-1 lead.

John Richmond and Ryan Seifert pitched for SU in the top of the seventh to lock down the combined no-hitter. Despite being no-hit, Mary Baldwin added two runs in the inning, but a groundout to the shortstop gave SU the final out needed to secure the win.

SU's pitching staff struck out 12 batters in the win. Keenan went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Smith also had a multi-hit game.
