Keenan Hits for Cycle in Game Two of Non-Conference Sweep

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program stretched its season-opening win streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington on Saturday at home.

The Hornets (5-0) won game one 9-4, before completing the sweep with a 14-4 eight-inning win in game two against the Lions (0-2).

GAME ONE RECAP

The Hornets added a pair of runs in the first inning, with Carl Keenan scoring after his leadoff single, and Tyler Smith scoring Kyle Garrett with a single to center field. Penn State Abington cut the Hornets' lead in half in the second inning with a bases-loaded groundout.

Christian Carver and Garrett scored in the third and fourth innings, respectively, both on passed balls, giving SU a 4-1 lead.

Shenandoah added five runs to the board in the fifth. Garrett drove in the first run of the inning, drawing a walk with the bases loaded. Jaime Padilla and Tyler Smith picked up singles in the following two at-bats, scoring Keenan and Cole Ambrosius. Padilla came across home late in the inning, making it 9-1, off an RBI single from JP Williams.

Penn State Abington added its three final runs of the game with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Jacob Gilbert (2-0) picked up the start for the Hornets, going six complete innings, allowing one run, and striking out seven.

Williams, Garrett, Keenan, and Smith all had multiple hits in the contest.

GAME TWO RECAP

Carl Keenan hit his second leadoff home run of the season to put SU up 1-0 in the first. Penn State Abington evened the game with a solo home run in the next half inning.

A triple by Michael Kozikowski helped set up the Hornets' second run of the game, as the first-year scored on a bunt by Christian Carver. Then in the third, SU took a 5-1 lead off another triple, this time from JP Williams.

Jaime Padilla made it three consecutive innings with a triple for SU, as he hit one to right field, which scored Jacob Martin. Tyler Smith followed Padilla's at-bat with an RBI double to left center before crossing the plate later in the fourth on an error by the visitors.

The lead was 8-1 for SU after the fifth inning, as Blaine Griffin (2-0) went the first five innings on the mound for the home team, allowing just two hits and punching out six.

The Hornets continued to add to their lead throughout the rest of the game, before ending the game in the eighth inning, thanks to a two-run home run by Dylan Mauzy and an RBI double from Keenan. Keenan's game-ending double gave him the cycle in the contest, after tripling in the fifth.

The Hornets had four triples as a team, which is tied for the most all-time in a single game for the program.
