Scarbrough Earns First Win at SU as Hornets' Softball Sweeps Cougars

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team and new head coach Olivia Scarbrough won their first games of the 2026 season with a season-opening sweep at home versus Misericordia University.

The Hornets (2-0) scored a combined 12 runs in the sixth inning between the two games, first scoring eight runs in the sixth inning of a 9-0 game one victory, before winning game two against the Cougars (0-2) with four runs in their final offensive inning.

GAME ONE RECAP

First-year pitcher Gracie Ravenkamp (1-0) pitched a complete game in her first collegiate appearance. Ravenkamp held the Cougars scoreless and only gave up three hits and struck out two.

The first run of the season was scored by first-year Keagan Cooper, who hit a two-run solo home run to left field in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hornets came to the plate 12 times and scored eight runs. Allison McQueeney scored the first run of the inning off a wild pitch, prior to Makayla Cox adding an RBI single to make it 3-0. With Shenandoah now up 5-0, Marisa Sawn hit her first career home run, scoring Paige Eagleton in the process to make it 7-0. Sydney Adler ended the game with a two-out, bases-loaded single, which plated McQueeney and Payton Jensen.

The Hornets had seven steals in the win, which is tied for the second-most all-time in a game by SU. Lillie Harrison and McQueeney each had two.

GAME TWO RECAP

In the bottom of the first, Makayla Cox put Shenandoah up 1-0 with a double to right center. Pitcher Cadence Rieg only gave up one hit across the next two innings to help the Hornets maintain the slim lead.

With the game now tied at one, Cox hit a deep solo home run to left field that gave SU a 2-1 advantage in the sixth. Keagan Cooper and Ella Montgomery scored on a two-out, two RBI single by McQueeney. McQueeney had three hits in the game, helping her surpass 100 career hits. A passed ball in the next at-bat helped Maddie Esham cross the plate to make it 5-1.

Meghan Gaskins (1-0) retired the Cougars in order at the top of the seventh, capping off the sweep. Gaskins pitched the final three innings of the win, allowing one hit and zero walks.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah hosts Juniata next Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
