Baseball Defeated by Generals in First Road Game of Season

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program went on the road for the first time this season and lost 4-2 in ODAC play at Washington and Lee University on Tuesday.

A two-out, two-run double by the Generals (6-5-1, 2-2-1 ODAC) in the sixth inning was the difference in the game as the Hornets (14-2, 1-2) left the bases loaded to end the game.

RECAP

Three walks, two stolen bases, and two hits in the bottom of the first gave the Generals an early 2-0 advantage in the midweek tilt. The Generals' pitching held the Hornets to two hits in the first three innings.

Aaron Caughlin made his first career pitching appearance when he entered the game in the top of the second with two outs. He retired the first five batters he faced to keep the Hornets' deficit at two entering the middle third of the inning.

In the fourth inning, the Hornets picked up a one-out hit-by-pitch by Tyler Smith. With the next at-bat, JP Williams delivered a double to left center that scored Smith, cutting SU's deficit to one. Caughlin came back out in the fourth and had a perfect inning. Caughlin finished his outing with three strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, the Generals gathered three consecutive two-out hits to grab a 4-1 lead.

Entering the ninth, SU still trailed by three and picked up a lead-off walk from Anthony Arrichiello. A Carl Keenan double put runners in scoring position for Shenandoah, while Kyle Garrett drew a walk to load the bases, with just one out.

Dillon Mauzy made it a 4-2 ballgame with a sacrifice fly to right field, which plated Arrichiello. Jaime Padilla then drew a four-pitch walk to reload the bases, but Shenandoah struck out in the final at-bat to give the Generals the win.

Joe Gleason (0-1) got the start on the mound for Shenandoah, while Andrew Gload, Braden Landis, and Joey Mitchell also saw time on the bump.
