Westminster Rallies Past Men's Lacrosse 10-9 in Overtime

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team lost 10-9 in overtime on Wednesday at home in non-conference play against Westminster College.

The Hornets (2-5) led 9-5 entering the fourth quarter, but the Titans (2-4) fought back to tie the game at nine. Just after the game-tying goal, the game entered an hour-long weather delay, with the Titans coming out of the break and scoring the overtime winner two minutes into the extra frame.

RECAP

The Hornets came out and attacked early, scoring the first two goals less than two minutes into the game, with markers from Liam Arnsmeyer and Brody McClure. Westminster cut its deficit in half, but a caused turnover by Kennedy Duda led to Luke Petrie giving the Hornets another two-goal lead. With just under six minutes left in the first, the Titans scored to make it 3-2, which would be the score at the end of one.

The Titans came into the second and scored three unanswered goals to lead 5-3 with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Just after the Titans' fifth goal, Wyatt Gessner picked up a groundball after a McClure faceoff win, leading to D.J. Lee scoring for the Hornets. In the latter portion of the quarter, Petrie gave the Hornets two more goals for a 6-5 lead, including a man-up tally with an assist from Noah Nolt.

Defense played strongly for both sides in the third, with neither team able to score for the first 11 minutes of the quarter. During that span, the Hornets caused two turnovers, and Jack Dwyer made four saves. Shenandoah finally broke the scoreless period with a Sam Poster goal. Xavier Parker and Jake Green extended the Hornets' lead to 9-5 with assists from Ryan Ho and Arnsmeyer. All three SU goals came in the final 3:38 of the third.

Both teams struggled to score early in the fourth, until the Titans were able to score four goals in four minutes to tie the game at nine. Following the tying goal, the final 4:23 of regulation was put on pause due to severe weather in the area, causing an hour delay in the game.

With neither team finding the back of the net by the end of regulation, the game went to overtime. The Titans won the faceoff to begin the extra period, but Lee quickly caused a turnover that led to a shot from Poster, which was saved by the Titans. The save helped keep the visitors alive, leading to the game-winner with 1:59 left in OT.

Dwyer made 16 saves in the game for the Hornets, including nine in the second half.

Westminster killed off five SU man-up chances, including a minute-long penalty in the final moments of the fourth.
