Seventh Inning Comeback Gives Softball Split During Final Day in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. - During its final day of a spring break trip to Florida for the Space Coast Spring Games, the Shenandoah University softball team split its two games, defeating Baldwin Wallace University in the opener, 8-7, and dropping its final contest to an undefeated Muskingum University, 6-4.

The Hornets (11-3) completed a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped off by a walk-off double from Marisa Sawn to take the win from the Yellow Jackets (4-2), while the Fighting Muskies (9-0) scored four runs in the second inning to end the Hornets' trip.

BALDWIN WALLACE RECAP

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, leading to the Yellow Jackets grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a left field line RBI single.

With a perfectly executed double steal, Allison McQueeney stole home in the third inning to put the Hornets on the board. With the steal, McQueeney now holds the program's single-season stolen base record.

A Keagan Cooper RBI scored Payton Jensen later in the inning to make it 2-1 in favor of the Hornets. With two outs on the board in the third, Cadence Rieg singled to right field and moved to second on an error, but then was able to continue to round the bases thanks to another Yellow Jacket error to put SU up 3-1.

Two errors by Shenandoah, plus a two-run home run by the Yellow Jackets, gave Baldwin Wallace the lead back, 4-3, in the fourth. In the fifth, Baldwin Wallace scored two more runs to double up SU.

A two-out RBI single from Brenna Westwood cut the Hornets' deficit to two, 6-4, in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Lillie Harrison. In the next half inning, the Yellow Jackets took their lead back to three with an infield, bases-loaded RBI single.

Meghan Gaskins (4-0) entered to pitch for Shenandoah in the sixth inning and pitched a flawless seventh inning to keep SU's deficit at three.

The bottom of the seventh began with a Yellow Jackets fielding error, putting Cooper on base, while Sarah Connell singled to put two runners on with no outs. A Rieg RBI double and an RBI by Maddie Esham made it a 7-6 game with still no outs in the inning.

Directly after Esham's RBI, Westwood stepped up to the plate and drove in the tying run with an RBI single to left. Paige Eagleton came in to pitch run for Westwood and immediately stole second. This allowed Marisa Sawn to hit a walk-off RBI double to center field, giving Shenandoah the win.

Connell, Rieg, and Westwood each had 3-for-4 games at the plate, with Westwood driving in a team-high two RBI.

MUSKINGUM RECAP

In the bottom of the first, the Fighting Muskies hopped to the lead first with a two-out RBI single. The Hornets then put pressure on the Fighting Muskies in the second inning by loading the bases on a Marisa Sawn walk, a Brenna Westwood single, and a Paige Eagleton walk.

With the bases loaded and one out, Kelly Hartman lined a bases-clearing three RBI triple down the right field line to give SU the 3-1 advantage. Hartman then scored on a passed ball to push the lead to three.

However, Muskingum immediately fought back and gained the lead with a four-run bottom of the second thanks to five hits and an error by the Hornets.

The Fighting Muskies added the final run of the game in the sixth, capping their 6-4 win.

Cadence Rieg (1-3) started in the circle for Shenandoah, while Ava Matthews pitched the final four ? innings.
