Opatovsky Scores Four Times in Women's Lacrosse Loss to No. 25 CNU

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team played its final home non-conference game of the season on Wednesday evening and fell 17-9 to No. 25 Christopher Newport University.

After the Hornets (5-3) came within one in the second quarter, the Captains (7-1) went on a half-ending 3-0 run to pull away in the non-conference clash of Virginia institutions.

RECAP

Natalie Opatovsky began the game with the first goal to put Shenandoah in front 1-0 off an assist from Emily Ransom. Over the next two minutes, the Captains responded with a pair of goals to gain their first lead of the evening, before Ransom evened things at two with 5:53 to go in the first. However, a goal in the latter minutes of the frame gave CNU a 3-2 lead.

The Captains opened the second quarter with three straight goals to extend their lead to four, five and a half minutes into the frame. Sofia Albi cut SU's deficit to two with a man-up goal, prior to Ransom connecting with Ayla Jantz to make it a 6-4 game. A caused turnover by Talia Maria led to Ransom scoring the Hornets' third consecutive goal to come within one. Despite the Hornets holding the momentum, the Captains ended the first half with three goals in the final 2:34 for a 9-5 halftime lead.

Madison Perry entered the cage for the Hornets at the start of the third and made a save within the first four minutes, allowing Jantz and Opatovsky to score for the Hornets to cut the deficit down to two, 9-7. Perry made another save in the quarter, but the Captains struck late to carry a three-goal advantage into the final quarter.

Christopher Newport added seven more goals in the fourth, including two in the final 15 seconds of play. Opatovsky tallied the only two goals of the quarter for Shenandoah, giving her four goals on the day. Ransom joined Opatovsky with a four-point game, with two goals and two assists.

Shenandoah had 10 caused turnovers on the defensive side of the ball, led by Maria's three. Victoria Wunderlich chipped in two for the Hornets as well.

Perry ended her night with three saves, while Maddie Gaboury got the start in net and made four saves in her 30 minutes of action.

The Hornets are home this Saturday for a 3 p.m. ODAC game versus Virginia Wesleyan University.
