Softball Claws WildCats in ODAC Sweep

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team earned its second ODAC sweep of the week with a pair of home wins over Randolph College on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (15-3, 4-0 ODAC) won both games in run-rule fashion, defeating the WildCats (2-12, 0-2) 10-2 in six innings in game one, prior to a 10-0 five-inning game two win.

GAME ONE RECAP

The WildCats grabbed the lead first in game one in the top of the first, but Cadence Rieg crossed the plate in the home half of the inning to tie the contest. Shenandoah then grabbed the lead in the fourth thanks to a WildCats error.

In the fifth, after being hit by a pitch, Payton Jensen came around to score on an RBI double by Kelly Hartman. Hartman scored two batters later to make it 4-1 with an RBI single from Rieg. In the top of the sixth, the WildCats responded with one run to cut their deficit to two.

The bottom of the sixth started with a single from Brenna Westwood, prior to Paige Eagleton drawing a walk. This set up a three-run home run by Jensen to put the Hornets up by five. Later in the inning, with Allison McQueeney on third, Rieg made it an 8-2 game with an RBI triple, before scoring on a single by Keagan Cooper. Lu Cirrilo came in to pinch run for Cooper and crossed the plate to end the game on an RBI hit by Makayla Cox.

Ava Matthews (1-0) picked up her first career win with a five-inning appearance, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Rieg led the Hornets with three hits, while Westwood also chipped in with a multi-hit game.

GAME TWO RECAP

Shenandoah started hot in game two with a six-run first inning. The scoring started with Allison McQueeney coming home on a throwing error in the outfield. Cadence Rieg then scored on an RBI hit from Makayla Cox. A few batters later, Maddie Esham hit a two-out single for two RBI, scoring Cox and Brenna Westwood.

The first-inning scoring was capped off with a Paige Eagleton left field line double that scored Esham and Kelly Hartman.

In the second, Rieg stole home for the seventh run of the game, before Westwood singled home Cox, making it 8-0.

Two errors helped McQueeney score in the third after she stole second. Another error in the fourth plated the final run of the day, with Gracie Ravenkamp coming across following a double by the first-year.

Rieg (3-3) pitched a complete game in the win, allowing three hits, one walk, while striking out two.

McQueeney, Rieg, Cox, and Westwood each had two hits in the game.
