Women's Lacrosse Defeated by No. 17 Messiah in Non-Conference Closer

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team went on the road on Wednesday afternoon and fell 16-4 to nationally-ranked Messiah University in a non-conference game.

After the Hornets (6-4) took the lead to start the game, the No. 17 Falcons (5-4) went on a 7-0 run to grab the momentum for the rest of the contest.

RECAP

A groundball picked up by Talia Maria led to transition offense for the Hornets, with Addison Harmel picking up the game's opening goal on an assist from Natalie Opatovsky. However, nearly 80 seconds later, the Falcons would hold a 2-1 lead. By the end of the first, Messiah had a 5-1 advantage.

Following two more goals by the Falcons to begin the second, Harmel registered her 23rd goal of the season and second of the game to cut the Hornets' deficit to five. Offense for both teams struggled to score for the rest of the quarter, with Messiah scoring one more goal before the half, and Maddie Gaboury making four saves.

Madison Perry started the second half in goal for SU and made an early save, which helped set up Ayla Jantz scoring for the Hornets. Right after Jantz's goal, the Falcons answered with three goals over the next two minutes to grab an 11-3 lead. Opatovsky scored a free position goal for Shenandoah just before the quarter wrapped up, after Messiah added two more goals to its total.

Messiah controlled the fourth, outscoring the Hornets 3-0 in the final 15 minutes and going a perfect 5-for-5 on clear attempts with just one turnover.

Maria led Shenandoah in draw controls with seven, while tying for the team-high in caused turnovers alongside Nicole Graham, Victoria Wunderlich, and Lindsay McCrory. Maria and Harmel each had the team-high in groundballs with three.

Shenandoah is on the road this Saturday for an ODAC game at Guilford, which is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
