Track and Field Opens Up Weekend at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - A group of field athletes and distance runners from the Shenandoah University outdoor track and field teams competed at Bridgewater College on Friday for day one of the Dr. Harry M. Doc Jopson Invitational.

TRACK RECAP

The only event that the Hornets ran in on Friday was the 10,000m on the men's and women's side. 

Seven men represented SU in the men's race. Zack Hamacher finished sixth with a 34:11.03, which was the best for the Hornets in the event on Friday. Seconds after Hamacher, Isaac Clarke finished seventh at 34:16.92, and Ethan Beaugez rounded out top-10 finishers for SU with a 34:38.76. Brenden Maloy came in 12th with a time of 35:33.13, and John Buckley (37:11.08), Tyler Mullen (37:51.71), and Corey Christensen (39:02.60) concluded the race in 17th, 18th, and 19th place, respectively. Six of the seven Hornets set personal bests in the event, with Maloy's time besting his previous by over two minutes.

Lauren Tooman, the only Hornet in the women's race,  crossed the finish line at 44:30.36 for a fifth-place finish.

FIELD RECAP

Elaina Ramos moved up in the SU record book with the third-best mark all-time in the women's triple jump, hitting 10.24m to place third on Friday.

Ramos also placed sixth in the women's javelin, hitting a throw of 27.08m, with Molly Donaldson placed just ahead of her at 27.36m. Kaitlyn Loy reached 21.33m for a 10th-place finish. Ramos and Loy set PRs on Friday.

Donaldson competed in the discus as well and hit a mark of 26.29m, which gave her 17th. Jillian Taylor placed 18th with a throw of 24.39m in her first time in the event.

On the men's side, Grady Speer finished just inside the top 10 of discus with a mark of 35.98m. Sawyer Paine set a new personal best of 25.96m, surpassing last week's distance of 23.94m. Speer took part in the javelin as well and placed ninth at 34.64m, which is a new PR.

UP NEXT

The Hornets compete in a total of 25 events on Saturday during the final day of the Doc Jopson Invitational.
