Mims Sets School Record at Doc Jopson Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Shenandoah University outdoor track and field teams wrapped up its time at the Dr. Harry M. Doc Jopson Invitational at Bridgewater College on Saturday, with Mekhi Mims setting a new school record in the high jump.

Overall at the two-day event, the Hornets broke one school record, had 10 updates to the program's top-10 list, and set 48 personal records. Additionally, SU had 35 top-10 finishes throughout the two days.

FIELD RECAP

Mekhi Mims' record jump came in at 1.92m, surpassing the previous record of 1.90m, which he held. The graduate student holds the high jump record for indoor and outdoor, with his indoor mark sitting at 1.94m.

In the men's long jump, Zachary Sheehan hit 6.39m for fifth place, and he now holds the sixth-best mark all-time for the program. Kaitlyn Loy had a 4.78m jump in the women's event, which is the fourth-best all-time for the Hornets. Loy also reached 2.59m in the women's pole vault.

Molly Donaldson competed in the women's hammer throw and shot put on Saturday. The first-year set a PR in the hammer with a distance of 33.65m, passing last week's mark of 30.33m. In the shot put, Donaldson placed third with a mark of 11.82m.

In the men's shot put, Grady Speer had the best outing for the Hornets. Speer placed 11th at 11.53m, while Sawyer Paine and Luke Jacobs placed 18th and 19th at 10.16m and 10.09m, respectively. Speer and Paine set personal bests in the hammer throw with distances of 39.85m and 29.89m, respectively. Speer wrapped up in ninth in the hammer.

TRACK RECAP

In the sprints, Shenandoah competed in the men's 100 meters, as Sean Rosner led the group with an 11.40 for 11th, followed closely by Demorris Eubanks in 13th at 11.49. Zachary Sheehan rounded out the Hornets in 23rd with an 11.97.

In the women's 100 meters, Ruth McGhee qualified for the final after running 12.90 in the prelims and went on to place fifth overall with a 12.93, placing her seventh all-time for the Hornets.

The 200 meters saw several Hornets in action on both sides. Roman Bernard paced the men with a ninth-place finish (22.61), while Sheehan (23.49), Jaidan Cameron (23.92), and Kowen Brassfield (24.64) followed. On the women's side, McGhee added another fifth-place finish at 26.29, which is fifth best all-time for the Hornets. Myah Powell-Utley took ninth at 26.55, moving to seventh all-time for the Hornets. Grace Semow (28.22) and Amy Oleksy (28.53) also competed in the event to set PRs.

In the 400 meters, Bernard delivered one of the top performances of the weekend, placing second overall with a time of 49.81, the second fastest mark in program history. For the women, Oleksy (1:03.55) and Semow (1:03.84) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.

Shenandoah showed depth in the 800 meters, led by Kyle Corpin, who placed eighth in 2:03.66. He was followed by Nathan Lee (14th, 2:09.28) and Jack Micco (18th, 2:17.52). On the women's side, Emily Bultema took eighth place with a 2:36.95.

The Hornets had a strong presence in the 1,500 meters, with Corpin again leading the way in seventh (4:21.07). He was joined in the top 10 by Sebastian Berrios-Gandarillas (9th, 4:25.52) and Will Ashley (10th, 4:25.56), while Nathan Lee added an 11th-place finish at 4:28.69. On the women's side, Bultema (11th, 5:28.76) led Shenandoah, followed by Arial Crawford (13th, 5:36.03) and Rylee Miller (21st, 5:48.68).

In the 5,000 meters, Crawford ran a 21:18.48, while Miller took third at 22:14.52. On the men's side, Berrios-Gandarillas placed fifth in 16:27.37, followed by Shane Lyons (7th, 17:36.96) and Jack Baker (8th, 19:08.36).

In the hurdles, Wyatt Newcome competed in the men's 400-meter hurdles and placed eighth with a time of 1:02.32, while Elaina Ramos took sixth in the women's race at 1:15.57, giving her the eighth-best mark all-time for SU.

Shenandoah competes at the Colonial Relays starting on Thursday and concluding on Saturday.
