Baseball Concludes Opening Home Stand with Sweep

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program concluded its 15-game season-opening home stand with a sweep of Nichols College on Sunday. SU won game one 7-1, prior to rounding out the day with a 10-4 victory in game two.

The Hornets (14-1) didn't allow any walks and struck out 19 total batters in the two games over the Bison (1-3).

GAME ONE RECAP

Shenandoah scored a single run in each of the first three innings. Jaime Padilla had an RBI hit up the middle to score Kyle Garrett in the first, while Garrett plated Brady Morrell in the second on a single to center. Adham Sahebzadah delivered a single to right field on a 2-1 count, scoring Tlyer Smith to give SU a 3-0 lead in the third.

The Bison shut the Hornets down in the fourth, while adding a run of their own in the away half of the inning to get on the board.

Padilla added his second RBI of the outing with a first-pitch double that scored Dillon Mauzy all the way from first. The Hornets' lead grew to five after Smith was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, two perfectly executed double steals brought a pair of runs home for the Hornets, with JP Williams and Samuel Vandrey scoring.

Michael Meyers (2-0) earned the win on the mound, going six innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. Joey Mitchell went the next two and retired the six batters he faced, including striking out the side in the eighth. Ryan Seifert pitched a scoreless ninth inning, despite allowing three hits that loaded the bases.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Hornets' offense was quiet for the first few innings, which allowed the Bison to snag a 3-0 lead in the third off a single and a double.

Tyler Smith finally put the Hornets on the board in the game with a solo home run, his sixth of the season. The Horents then grabbed five more runs in the fifth off just one hit in the inning. Nichols walked five, hit one, and threw three wild pitches to help the Hornets score.

A Jaime Padilla sacrifice fly scored Christian Carver in the sixth to make it 7-3, while Smith had an RBI single through the left side that brought home Dillon Mauzy for an 8-3 advantage.

Nolan Kruse and JP Williams added the final RBI of the day for the Hornets in their last two offensive innings. Kruse had an RBI on a fielder's choice, while Williams hit a solo home run in the seventh.

Nick Bell got the start on the mound and went just shy of five innings with three strikeouts. Jake Holbert (1-0) came in for Bell and pitched the next two innings, allowing no hits and two base runners in a scoreless outing for the sophomore.
