Baseball Powers Past Yellow Jackets in Game Two of Split

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program began its conference schedule with a split on Saturday at home versus (RV) Randolph-Macon College. RMC won game one 4-1 before SU responded with a seven-inning 16-2 win in the closer.

The Hornets (12-1, 1-1 ODAC) exploded for 16 runs in innings four through six of game two to get the split after the Yellow Jackets (7-3, 2-2) held Shenandoah scoreless for the first eight innings of their game one victory.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the top of the first, scoring on a fielder's choice and a single, with all seven batters in the inning reaching base.

Shenandoah starting pitcher Jacob Gilbert (2-1) pitched four innings and allowed zero runs in his final three innings of work.

Anthony Arrichiello, a left-hander, went to the mound in the fifth and pitched three ? innings, having a career-high in strikeouts with four.

The Yellow Jackets' defense turned three double plays in the game which allowed them to carry their 3-0 lead into the ninth. A one-out single in the ninth scored their fourth run of the day with Shenandoah down to its final inning.

After two quick outs to begin the home half of the ninth, Dillon Mauzy reached on an infield single before scoring on a Jaime Padilla RBI double to right center. However, the Yellow Jackets struck out the final batter to pick up the win.

Tyler Smith and Mauzy led the Hornets at the plate, going 2-for-4 each in the game.

GAME TWO RECAP

Randolph-Macon struck first in game two thanks to a Horents error that scored the opening run in the first inning. Shenandoah's offense remained quiet for the first three innings, until tying the game at one in the fourth with a Tyler Smith RBI double.

Blaine Griffin (4-0) settled down after the first inning and went five innings, allowed zero earned runs, gave up two hits, and punched out four for the win.

The Hornets blew the doors wide open in the fifth inning, scoring nine runs thanks to seven hits and four RMC errors. Anthony Arrichiello, in as a pinch hitter, had an RBI single up the middle to start the scoring in the frame. Carl Keenan then blasted a two-run home run to right field to put Shenandoah up 4-1.

Kyle Garrett crossed the plate on an error by RMC's catcher to add the fourth run of the inning, while Adham Sahebzadah added an RBI to make it 7-1. JP Williams, Matthew Atchley, and Arrichiello all had RBI singles in the latter portion of the fifth, giving SU a 10-1 lead entering the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets added a run in the top of the sixth, but Shenandoah stayed hot at the plate to make it 16-2 by the end of the frame. Dillon Mauzy had an opposite-field home run that scored Garrett, making it 12-2.

Later in the sixth, with bases loaded, Samuel Vandrey was hit-by-pitch to keep the bases loaded and give the shortstop an RBI. Keenan then plated Atchley and Williams on a two RBI single up the middle, prior to Garrett ending the scoring with a single through the right side.

Braden Landis pitched the final two innings for Shenandoah and forced a game-ending double play in the seventh.

Garrett and Williams led Shenandoah with three hits in the second game, along with two-hit performances by Keenan, Mauzy, and Arrichiello. Keenan led the team with four RBI.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah is home on Sunday at 12 p.m. versus Nichols College in a non-conference doubleheader.
