Softball Begins Trip to Sunshine State with Two Wins

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Shenandoah University softball team started its spring break trip to the Space Coast Spring Games with two games on Saturday. The Hornets (5-1) defeated New England College, 8-1, in the first game of the day and had a 5-2 decision in the nightcap against Emerson College.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE RECAP

Allison McQueeney scored the first run of the day for Shenandoah after leading the game off with a single, before stealing second. The center fielder scored on an RBI single by Cadence Rieg. Makayla Cox then pushed the Hornets' lead to two with an RBI single that scored Rieg.

McQueeney helped plate the next two runs for Shenandoah to put them up 4-0. First in the fourth, McQueeney hit a single to left field that scored pinch runner Lillie Harrison, after a Brenna Westwood walk. In the sixth, McQueeney drove in Paige Eagleton with a single down the line in left field.

After the Pligrams (3-7) scored their lone run of the day in the sixth, Shenandoah put the game away with a four-run seventh inning. Sarah Connell doubled to left center for a pair of RBI that scored Aimee Ord and Lu Cirillo. Then three batters later, Payton Jensen singled to left field for a two-RBI knock that plated Westwood and Connell.

Starting pitcher Gracie Ravenkamp (3-0) pitched a complete game, allowing one run, six hits, and five strikeouts. Ravenkamp has now tossed a complete game in all three of her starts this season, single-handedly surpassing the team's total from last season (2).

EMERSON COLLEGE RECAP

Allison McQueeney began the Hornets' second game of the trip with the team's first run once again. The leadoff hitter drew a full count walk, then stole second and third, before coming around to score on an error by Emerson.

The Lions (0-2) took a slim 2-1 lead in the third on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice. The score remained there until Keagan Cooper tied the contest at two for Shenandoah with a single in the fifth. Sarah Connell then drove a two-RBI triple to push the Hornets back in the lead, 4-2. Connell then quickly scored on an RBI single by Brenna Westwood in the next at-bat.

Cadence Rieg (1-1) pitched a complete game for the Hornets, their second of the day, with a seven-inning, nine-strikeout performance. Rieg also helped the team out offensively with two triples.

UP NEXT

The Hornets are in Florida for their next eight games, playing Wisconsin Lutheran College and the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday.
